We know.

Trying to post ironically about it as if you're in on some joke is cringe.

That's the bad part about it. I am trying to make it sound cool. WTF is wrong with me? I know it makes me suck even more, but I still do it.

Some kids with what we now call autism used to likely be called simply "retarded"

My daughter has cerebral palsy. I refer to her as disabled or handicapped or special needs. Fwiw.

But I’m not going to scream at the sky if someone says retarded. She is what she is and semantics won’t change it.

This is roughly what I am looking for. Like I said, I know I didn't ask in the most PC way, but this is sort of what I am hitting on. Just thinking back, I remember in grade school there was this kid who was in my class (accelerated), but would freak out over small things. I don't remember exactly what, I just remember the kid would be on the floor by his desk crying and throwing fits. And certain things set him off. But he made good grades an all.. But certain things would trigger him.

I am not talking about people with cerebral palsy. CP affects motor skills right?

I am referring to people who do not have any physical disabilities or doesn't have something that is noticeable until they start to interact.

Clicked thread to see if there was a "there was this one time" story on the first page. Did not disappoint.

I swear to you its not made up. If I recall the kid had an aide with him at all times and she would get pissed when people would buuzzz at him. If I remember correctly, he would bend his hands and turn them around and stick where you hand bends in his ears so his hands would stick out while he took off running.

It's horrible to think about it today, but at the time.. It was funny.. Like all teenagers, we were stupid so everyone would laugh.

diagnosed with autism today?

neurological disorders come in a variety of flavors......one being a broad category called the Spectrum (Autism). That spectrum varies wildly too, from non-verbal (VERY sad) to Asperger's to Sensory Processing Disorder (which some say is a class of its own).

Those kids who were "retarded" or explosive/bad or off-a-bit were battling demons that we only now are beginning to truly get a grasp on.

If life was only about simple behavioral issues and "bad kids", we'd be so lucky.

I knew it wasn't a yes or no question, but I didn't know any other way to ask it. And I did't do a good job at being more specific. But this is part of what I wanted to know.

So people who have a mental disability, that isn't obvious (like downs, etc) can fall into a category that isn't autism. And that there are categories of unknown.

Some people are just "slow", would probably be someone who falls into the unknown?
