They put it on Father’s Day so they’d be forced to take a backseat to the real action.

I think the Juneteenth crowd and the pride crowd ought to fight for June supremacy.

i am all for more holidays so juneteenth is cool with me. Wish the bossman would give the day since my daycare does.

Perhaps, but it was delayed enforcement that came over two years after the EP and several months after the end of the war. I always thought it was more of a Texas holiday.

But that’s not how the holiday is presented.

I had always heard Juneteenth was a big deal because it took nearly three years for slaves in Texas to learn they were free, and only after Union forces finally landed at Galveston during Reconstruction.

That is completely false. The timeline of “nearly three years” is directly in reference to Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in September 1962, and it took affect January 1st, 1963.

In reality:
- Lee surrendered in April 1865
- Kirby Smith and the western forces surrendered May 26, 1865
- Union General Granger issued a notice informing Texas of the proclamation freeing all enslaved people on June 19, 1865.
- The last Confederate forces surrendered when Cherokee General Waite lays down arms on June 23, 1865
