When the police stop someone can cops open locked compartments?

Curious what the law is on this.

No unless they have suspicion about drugs or something illegal. I.E they see a blunt, needles, drugs, on your seat.

Not unless they have probable cause (ie. they can see an illegal substance in plain view on the seat).

Although watching Live PD has taught me that if they really want to search your car, they'll call in a K9 to sniff around the outside and "hit" to give them probable cause to conduct a full search

This is so true. The law is they have to have probable cause, but the k9 will hit on 100% of the cars they inspect.

They will, if they want to.

If a cop asks you if you can open the trunk, it is best to waive your fifth amendment right and do so, along with any personal items you are carrying.

That way you won't get accused of not complying.

Curious what the law is on this.

What they will do is bring the dog out..

The dog will "hit" on your car. The dog ALWAYS hits. That is their job.

Then they will claim they had cause to search.

Nope.

They can't even open closed compartments.

Failure to waive your rights (aka Noncompliance), tends to lead towards PC being invented, which will lead to impounding of the vehicle until a warrant can be issued.....and increased likelyhood of more evidence magically appearing in said vehicle once out of your possession/control.

I always make sure to record them on my iPad while informing them of my rights. My fans love my YouTube videos.
