I have a 12 and 13 year old, mother and son. Both are getting on, once they stop eating and walking is the limit i have set. The 13yo pretty much lives in the yard and is happy, she has about a 1/2 acre to hang out in but she never goes far.
I want them to have the most trauma free painless exits as possible.

No easy way to do it. I hate it for you. I have never had the balls to do it. I have had two dogs die. I took them to vet about once a week and he told me they were not in pain. One died in the bed with me at night the other was 18 and blind and could barely walk.. It was the weekend of the LSU Alabama game and I was airing the house out on a coll November day getting ready for game. He wandered into back yard and fell in the pool and drowned. He never left my room and then he did that. Probably go the best but it was tough.
ETA: I buried him in the back yard and made the dirt on top of his grave shaped a little like a stadium. Planted purple and gold flowers on one side and red and white flowers on the other.
I hate it for you and your family!

Recently lost our dog. He had gotten to where he couldn't hardly get up any more, had lost a bunch of weight, and some other issues. When it's time, you will know. I'd say the immobility is the key factor.
The vet wanted us in the room with him. My daughter and I were there petting him. Cried like a little girl the whole time. One of the hardest things I've ever had to do.

Same here mine was 15 as well. Poor old guy could barely walk and pooped himself the last week . So i gave him a good last few hours,good food and petting, and a bath and toke him to the vet to have him put down. Toke like 10-20 seconds after the injection. i recorded the last few minutes with him before the vet came in to give the shot but cant watch it even a year later. Cried like a baby when they gave him the shot. Buried him in my back yard!

It's all about the dog at this point. That many years of loving your family deserves an honorable end. Feed him A couple corn dogs, then go to the vet to do it the right way. Hold him in your lap so the last thing he experiences is your voice, face, and smell. Bury him, then drink some good whiskey.

Have you tried giving him hip and joint treatment, that would be my first question.
If you know the end is near, do things he has enjoyed, as much as possible, lots of good food and pictures. Love and being by your side is what the dog wants most.

I put my 16 year old dog down about a year ago. I still beat myself up for waiting too long. I was selfish and wanted to keep her longer when I should have done what was best for her.
Give your buddy the best send off possible. Mine was with a hamburger and a half day ride in the truck with her head out the window.
