Putting your dog down

I think we are going to put out dog down soon. He's joints are getting worse, he cant walk far enough to poop in the grass. His mind is still there, his body just isnt. What did some of you guys do before you took him to the vet?
He's been in our family for so long, he still smiles when hr sees us, this sucks

It's a hard decision - I dread the day I'll have to do it to my dog.

Give him the best last days of his life. A bucket list of sorts.

It sucks for sure, but thankfully its a very peaceful process. Had to put 2 down over the last few years and cried like a baby both times. Spend the time you have left spoiling the heck out of him. Take him for car rides if he enjoys that. Feed him all the table food he wants.

It sucks but if the quality of life is not there it is best to put him down. I went through the same thing a few months ago and it hurts but the dog was suffering and it was the right thing to do

I'm sure you've already seen a vet, but have you tried any pain medications? It can turn them into a completely new dog in some cases

It sounds like he's ready for some pain management. That might keep him around a few more months. If pain killers don't improve the situation, it's time.

It's selfish to wait too long like we did. If you're seriously thinking about it, it's probably already too late. It is better for everyone to go a little too early than a little too late.
Say your goodbyes and get it over with.

Had to do this with my old lab two years ago. In my case, he had testicular cancer and after I had his nuts removed, he lasted another 3 years but it had spread to the point he could hardly walk. Did the pain management for a while but I couldn't bare to see him in pain and the vet said it was time. This grown man cried like a little girl. I was in the room with him when they put him down.

Pay your vet a little extra to come to your house. They will give you some tranquilizers to give to your dog beforehand so your dog will be groggy and not get stressed when he sees the vet. When the vet came my dog barely acknowledged him.
Basically, she went to sleep in her favorite spot and never woke up.
I am a strong advocate of this approach. They don't have to go through the stress of going to the vet. I will take this approach going forward if need be.
ETA: I think my vet charged $30 extra.

Hes been on pain medication, i just don't think he'll make it through the winter. He smiles too much, I hate it.

If you've tried pain management & joint supplements & his quality of life isn't what it should be, then it's time. Spoil him rotten, buy him a burger or 3 & be with him when it's time.
To me, being there when it happens is the best thing you can do for him, don't let him go alone.
