There's even a single downvote for this, nevermind a vast majority downvote? Y'all are a bunch of assholes. OP is 110% right.

You know that going in. Upgrade, or shut the frick up.

All BS aside, people who don’t travel often won’t know it’s an unwritten rule or proper etiquette. Some people who travel often don’t know or aren’t aware it can be perceived as such an egregious offense. And sometimes it isn’t. Depends on the size and demeanor of the person behind you, flight length, etc. If you explain to the person that it’s a problem, most will be accommodating. Or they may explain they were up with a sick child all night and you can decide to defer. It’s all situational. But it’s reasonable to assume nobody is reclining with any intent other than to be comfortable. And most people are reasonable if given the chance. Some people just are a-holes. If that’s the case, then sure, knee them all flight as a matter principle. But the initial response shouldn’t be to passive aggressivly get even. That person likely has no idea your comfort is being compromised.

Most people never see the person sitting behind them.

All this lecturing, and you're all about being an a-hole to people that have a right to recline their seat. It's not situational. It is okay, or it's not.

Most folks don’t. Agreed. That’s the point. Usually there is no intent to bother anyone. And while I’d never do it, if somebody is antagonistic when you try to be reasonable and are actually being compromised by the seat reclining, that changes the dynamic.

How is it not situational? No two people are the same. Not the same size. Not the same demeanor. No flights are the same. Distance, time of day, type of plane. The possible interactions between people. Of course it’s situational. Everything is.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is a lot of people stuff the under-seat stowage completely full and take away most of their own leg room by choice.

I have never considered the reclining area of the seat in front of me "my space", if it is there then great, if not it wasn't mine to begin with.

Sorry if mentioned...too lazy to read all 9 pages but what this thread really about is how much airline travel sucks. Think everyone agrees on that.

They make the seats to recline. So just recline. What's the big deal.

Recliners make themselves comfortable at the expense of the person behind them. It's not their fault, it's the airlines for packing the seats in so tightly, but it still is the recliner stealing comfort from the person behind them. I'm taller and the person in front of me reclining makes my tray table much less useful.

Again, it's the airlines that have created this zero sum game, not the passengers, but don't pretend that people courteous enough to not recline and think others shouldn't recline without some level of consideration for the person behind them are overreacting to nothing.

If everyone puts their seat back then the distance remains the same just in a slightly more comfortable position

I have not flown in a single ash tray equipped plane.....that’s a weak argument.

Or maybe I'm not a hobbit, and there already isn't enough room so when you scoot back that inch and a half you are crushing my legs. You self centered frick.

You gotta be some kind of fat for the 2 inch recline to bother you.

You sound like the a-hole.

These seats go back something like 3 inches.

If you can’t tolerate that, you have a problem.

And the last time I checked, the reclining of the seat doesn’t move the tray.
