Yes, my friend and former coworker died last year from the flu. He was in his late 20s and was fine in health other than being overweight. He was fighting with his girlfriend the past week he was sick and told her not to come around and he didn't need her help. When he didn't show up to his job the next Monday and didn't answer his phone or log in on the computer, they did a wellness check and found him dead. Of the goddamn flu.
eta: Though I know nothing about the flu shot so don't take this post as endorsing it or not. I've never gotten one.

Briefly, he died a little while after I graduated. I did work with him on trauma surgery as a third year med student not long before he had to step away due to health reasons.
