You are doing it the right way....good job. Just don't stop cold turkey. Benzodiazepine withdrawal can be life threatening.

Be patient and you will feel much better with time.

I am going through the same thing right now. I actually went to an addiction specialist because my psych said, "just stop taking it." I probably won't see the psych again because that statement shows her ignorance on the medication that she is prescribing. Anyway, he gave me some other things to suppress withdrawals. You need to do this with medical assistance.

Don't freak out when you have your first "brain zap." It'll pass.

I've gotten off other anxiety/depression drugs and I did not enjoy the withdrawals.

That's the main thing OP is keeping in mind that things are going to eventually get back to normal even if it doesn't feel like it.

I didn't have these with xanax but I did with Lexapro. Man they were fricking weird. I had no idea what was happening and I felt like I'd never stop getting them.

Why did you HAVE to be on Xanax for 15 years? (I know it is for anxiety) but did you ever ask yourself/ address the underlying issues that can't be masked by a pill? Have you ever wondered how people dealt with problems before Xanax?

You’re doing the right thing by tapering off of it slowly. Withdrawal effects can include seizures or “brain zaps” and insomnia/excessive anxiety if stopped cold turkey.

For most it is because they are physically addicted is why. Just because you don’t mentally need it anymore doesn’t mean you can just quit.

I have heard that some moderate shock therapy is helpful.
