Go outside and look up, you might see some space trash

The next shower you might be able to see is known as the Leonids. Active from Nov. 6 to Nov. 30, it is expected to be at its peak from Monday night into Tuesday morning, or Nov. 16 to 17.
The Leonids are one of the most dazzling meteor showers and every few decades it produces a meteor storm where more than 1,000 meteors can be seen an hour. Cross your fingers for some good luck — the last time the Leonids were that strong was in 2002. Its parent comet is called Comet-Temple/Tuttle and it orbits the sun every 33 years.
The best you can probably expect this year is about 15 streaks per hour. But according to the International Meteor Organization, viewing conditions could be favorable as the moon is far from being full.

Is there a planet that’s visible this evening? I see one bright arse star nearly directly above me.

Probably Venus. Its been very bright lately.

It’s Mars. I bet it’s kinda pinkish.
Jupiter also is pretty bright overhead but I think it rises early.
Venus is NEVER overhead. Always very bright but early relatively low in the western sky; very pretty on winter nights in the early evenings.
Also, have y’all noticed the gorgeous red-ball-sunsets recently? That time of the year where the refraction off the atmosphere offers spectacular sunsets that you can comfortably watch with the naked eye.

You dipshits have gotta stop playing with your phones in order to see anything

Damn streetlight (that didn’t work pre-Laura) is making it hard to see.

Yes, it’s Mars and it’s bright reddish.

Hazy tonight in Houston (shocker). Can only see planets and bright stars.
I've driven out into the country to watch before, but I'm thinking it's a little cold to go sit outside for a couple hours to see a few pin streaks in the sky.

Yes Mars, Jupiter, even Saturn, all visible right now.

Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars are very visible. Venus is visible if you catch it in the right light, and I’ve read that another planet is also visible this month.
And if you want to see the meteor shower, 5 am is the peak time.

Just a suggestion for you guys that don't know what's what up there...download something like this.
LINK
Just a simple ap called Planets. Point it at the sky and it charts everything for you based on your location. It's perfect if you're looking for something basic to find the planets.

I use sky guide. The kids think it’s neat.

Venus will be about 30 degrees or so (guesstimating) above the horizon by about 5:30 AM in the morning in the Eastern sky. Brightest thing in the sky...can't miss it. Mercury will be lower on the horizon in the same plane at about the same time.

Should we just bet looking directly up, or in a certain direction?

I'll look it up, thanks. And yeah...once you actually show a kid that they're looking directly at a PLANET and they can see it with their own eye, they get pretty hooked.

It is very clear in Metairie. I saw a very short one last night, by chance. Went outside tonight for about 5 minutes didn't see anything. I am close to the lake so not much light pollution but not like in the country by any means.

We are getting a nice show. Like a previous poster said, put your phones down. Enjoy nature!
