Driving home this evening, I stopped at a gas station, swiped my card, and pulled on the credit card reader (as I always do), and the paneling came open and I saw a small raspberry pi CC skimmer on the inside.

Immediately called and canceled my card with my bank and informed a couldn't-care-less minimum wage employee who admitted they'd been having problems with pumps and readers.

Just beware, folks. People suck.

I have started doing this also since seeing more and more reports on the news.

Takes 2 seconds to do, saves months/years of headaches.

What do they look like? I hear that they've become a big problem recently but what should we be looking for?

My wife’s card info was stolen at a BP in Nashville. She discovered it when they used the card to buy McDonald’s right next to the station about an hour later.

Some are little inserts in the reader itself and some are chipsets placed inside the broken into paneling

It was in Tennessee, about 30 miles from the TN/VA line.

White collar crime is insane in TN. I had my card info stolen twice in the span of a few months in Knoxville.

If you always do it, why the hell don't you do it BEFORE you swipe to save you some bother?

That's just Dave Ramsey trying to prove credit cards are evil.

Here are two examples:

Basically if you give a slight tug on the card reader, it'll just pop off. People usually put them up hastily so they don't get caught. It's not secured down in most cases.

I typically do. For whatever reason this time, I did it afterward, but before I entered my zip code.

Damn, I must pay attention to this, plus inform the family.

Thanks for the heads up!

I do it too, but the good ones are inside the machine and hard to see.

I pound the credit card area with the butt of my palm a couple times before I enter my card. I also put my other hand over the top of my card when inserting and removing. I've not run into one, but I've instructed my son and wife to do the same. My son knocked one off in Albany.
