Protip: open up your faucets every few hours

And let them run. If it gets cold enough for long enough they will freeze even if left dripping. Source: experience.

Flush your toilet every couple of hours too. The only pipe I've ever had freeze was the supply line to the toilet.

Our pipes froze once at our last house. Luckily they didn't burst. It was weird waking up to no water anywhere in the house. I went back home at lunch and everything was working fine.

What kind of dumbass thinks "dripping" equals "not freezing" if it's 17 degrees?

How long should you let the faucet run?

Are these just the exterior pipes you’re all talking about in here? Only thing outside is our supply. All our other pipes are either in the attic (pex) or walls (some exterior).

If you're really worried about it, turn off the supply line to the house and open up the faucets.
If you're not that worried, turn up the heat, open the cabinets to let warm air in, and let the faucets drip. Also make sure any outside exposed pipes have some kind of cover.

I bought a cheap string of lights at Harbor Freight and hung under the house beside supply lines. Screwed 100 watt incandescent bulbs in. Works great so far.

No clue how cold it's getting down there, but up here you better have it running at half-stream at least.

Agreed. I also take the temp of the cold water tap with an instant read thermometer.

Does running the hot water make the pipes freeze faster?

Set the dishwasher and washing machine on delay to turn on in the middle of the night.

Dump all of your ice, out of your bin in freezer, before you go to bed. That way the icemaker will cycle throughout the night.

I got that covered. I tend to piss all night.

Also, don’t forget to smear feces over all household caulking. Works like a charm!

Here in NOLA the SWBNO website says to only run a spaghetti thin line of water from the faucet farthest from your water meter. I've done this before and still woken up to frozen pipes in my house, although admittedly they didn't burst.
