Whether justified or not, I’m a bit worried about my septic field freezing, so trying not to use too much water.

so if i have a house on piers, i could theoretically do this with the faucet at the lowest point?

We have a house on piers. When I did the plumbing, I purposely added an additional valve and line of pex that points down and acts as a drain line. So when I do want to drain the lines, I cut off the water and open the bypass valve outside and the water drains out of my water lines. Last night, I kept the water on and got up about every 2 hours and ran all faucets, bathtub and flushed the toilet. I normally run the hot water until I feel the water coming out hot. Our house is small so it usually doesn't take long and all of my pipes are wrapped. But they have frozen up in the past because I had one brass pex connection exposed and didn't notice it.

If the air around the pipe is 32 or less, it could freeze.

Thats a stupid article. The pipes bust when frozen and only begin to leak once they that out. It doesn't relieve pressure.

If frozen and faucet dripping, it reduces pressure since the water won’t expand radially. It freezes longitudinally and can push water out.

Just google it if you still doubt

Flush your toilet every couple of hours too. The only pipe I've ever had freeze was the supply line to the toilet.

It appears to have happened to me. Only one toilet is flushing in the house.

Wife was not amused when I mentioned the 5 gallon bucket and trash bag. Luckily we still have one in operation.
