We left our families in 1990, mine in South Louisiana and the bride's in North Louisiana. We had three children, ages 8, 6, 4 at the time. Primary reasons: my career and hopefully more opportunities for the children. Move was more difficult on the wife and leaving her family and lifetime friends - had been away from same for about 15 years by then.

The relocation was good for us. Have no idea how things would have been had we not left - can't prove an unknown. Don't believe we would have relocated if the children had been older.

Assume we have lived a pretty ordinary life and believe we have made a very nice life. The children are now married and building their families and we enjoy their company very much. Our parents are now deceased and our times with siblings are nice.

Move. We already had two young kids. Lived close to her parents and about 20 miles from mine.

Being close to family is so overrated.

This is ridiculous. It may be overrated for you, you might have a shitty family or don't really care about family that much, but it's a dumb statement. I've lived close to my immediate family and I've lived on the other side of the country. I'm extremely close with my family and choose to live close. We spend a lot of time together and my wife does with hers. To each their own.

We live in Wichita Falls. My home is New Orleans and wife calls Shreveport home. Eldest daughter is in Fort Worth, son is in Doha but family is here and youngest daughter is in Lubbock

I was about 30 when I got the itch. Took a couple of years to convince the wife.

I'd love to live in a cooler climate with more interesting terrain. My wife was absolutely adamant that we not move our kids around while they were in school. She went to 7 different schools growing up and never felt like she fit in anywhere. Sometimes it's not always as simple as it seems.

“So falls Wichita Falls”

How have you and your wife managed being from S and NW LA where your families most likely are? Help the OP navigate this chapter in his life

Most welcome, travelling was/is involved but that's part of it, children were a big factor in the decision - no guarantees but very important nonetheless

Yes, Wichita Falls.

We were both raised to be happy and independent and know we missed a lot by being apart but we also built our own traditions. Visits were always rich - never taken for granted - and tears always shed. We certainly stayed close , visited as much as able (even officiated the funerals of my mother and my wife's parents) and cousins have a great time when together

Con: LSU season tickets are useless

Bull.

I lived out of state for several years, kept our LSU season tickets and made it home to BR for games 3 or 4 times a year.. granted, i was only in Texas, but i know LSU fans who live as far away as California, have season tix, make it home for a couple games a year and sell the rest to family or friends... Life may take me to many places, but i’ll never willingly give up my season tix.

I love my family and miss them a ton, but I still wanted to experience living in other places. Probably will try to move closer to home in 5-6 years when we start making babies

South Texas can be fun man. I had a house half a mile from the beach and had some bomb arse parties. The only thing I miss is killing time with a six pack and listening to the waves. Great place to retire, but being single there sucked. Didn't seem like raising a family was any different.

N. LA to Southeast Alaska. Glorious 4K mile road trip, sight unseen. Best move I ever made.

Found jobs pretty quickly.

I lived in NYC when I was 22-23. That's understandable. Priorities change for most when you get older.

Also, you may love your wife but have different ideal places to live. Mine would be perfectly happy living in Naples, FL. I'd hate it being hot all year. Compromise will be your friend.
