On first glance it sounds stupid, but if LSU would build it on the edge of campus and acquire/build up all the land between north gate and downtown it would be a win

Can they build it around where The Water Campus is now?
I don't see the dozen or so new office buildings being developed there after the pandemic. That would be a solid spot for an arena with hotels, right next to Chealsea's. They could fit parking decks near there too.

Someone is eventually going to catch on to the fact that no matter what they build in this town, it will eventually be ruined. I wish that weren't the case- but there's plenty of evidence that suggests it is.

That's a good spot IMO.

They will probably finally get rid of the golf course.

The title is misleading.
It’s a new arena & it’s not replacing the River Center or the PMAC. The goal is for the River Center to be more of a convention hall (there are plans to build a convention hotel near the River Center) & the PMAC will eventually be renovated/rebuilt. The new arena will take over for concerts, sporting events, etc.

This is where it’s been rumored it would be built. LSU has the land in between campus & the water campus.

As part of the agreement, the Raising Canes River Center downtown could be refocused as a space mostly for conventions
This part of the article cracks me up. Yeah conventions are going to be lining up to travel to Baton Rouge for their shows

Not a fan of moving games off campus

BR actually gets a decent amount of conventions/conferences. I think I saw there’s something like 27 scheduled for this year.

“From my vantage point, this is the type of big-scale, exciting project that we need more of in Baton Rouge," Metro Councilman Rowdy Gaudet said.

I thought it was BRAC's for profit arm. I think they sold some of it to LSU but only the part where the River Model is.
That's not a deal breaker. LSU can acquire the land easily. I'm sure that BRAC would love to use the rest of the land around the stadium for hotels and restaurants.

Baton Rouge gets a lot of conventions considering the limited amount of space available and the relatively small market. They'd get even more if they can convert the old arena to a convention hall.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that the old River Center arena has been obsolete for 20 years. Their convention space is quite nice, but that was mostly built in the 1990s-2000s.
The arena is old and in really bad shape. It's worse than the PMAC IMO. They should knock down the River Center arena and expand the convention hall or build out entirely new convention spaces. They might be able to justify a hotel there too since they'd be able to get more than 1 event at a time.

I like this a lot. Tear down the PMAC and create an area similar to Champions Square for Tiger Stadium.

Just when you thought BR couldn't come up with any dumber shite than they already have, they blow you away with the dumbest shite you've ever heard. Holy frick this is dumb.
Why is this dumb? In fact, I think this is one of the smartest things Baton Rouge has ever tried to do.

This has nothing to do with the PMAC, which will more than likely stay in the same place just renovated or rebuilt.

Kind of weird that the River Center is where it is except that they originally built the old Centroplex Arena there. Seems like a huge convention center, hotels, etc. could be built out pretty easily where the old Maison Blanche is off Laurel. They could build something far larger out there and it would probably help improve that fairly empty area a bit. I imagine the old department store building could at least be partially repurposed for a convention hall.
I like the idea of having the new Arena either by the Water Campus place or along Nicholson by the track stadium. No idea how they'd fit it on campus without knocking down something else though. I was playing around with the distance calculators on Google yesterday - the newer arenas have a footprint of 450-550 feet, and that doesn't count the retail and hotels they likely want to build next to this place to capture that additional revenue.

Do not tear down the PMAC…. huge mistake
Why? The cost and time to retrofit that thing properly makes it not worth it to keep it.

I would hate to live with this attitude and mindset in life.
So should a city (a capitol city at that) never try to build/grow/innovate? Should we all give up and move somewhere else? Because "someone" might realize everything here gets ruined?
