I found the Ball for $1,899 online and I'm tempted to pull the trigger. But like Gaston said, the dial is a little small compared to the case. I don't know what that would look like if I put a black band on it to wear with a suit. I'd like to see it in person, but I don't know who would sell Ball in the area.

If you really want the Tag then don't settle for the Ball. What's the point of saving $1000 if you're already spending almost $2k? Put a little aside and get what you really want.

I'd buy this hand winding Marine Original before a Tag or Ball, if you don't care about a bracelet.

I mean look at this movement.

41mm completely badass watch. Spending $3k on a Tag is just outrageous IMO. Spending more and getting one of their super nice movements I could totally see doing if I had the money. I mean they sell $1000 quartz watches...$1000 with an unremarkable movement? I just can't see it. That's just me though, I could see how people would think they look nice. They are nice. Just not what I want.

That's a photo I took of my Trainmaster Cleveland Express. Got a great deal on it from Amazon and love it. ETA: comes with the black band, I just swapped it out with a croc strap.

I want to try to understand more of what is going on with the movements in watches, but I'm not even really sure what resource to use to learn more. When you look at that movement, what is it that intrigues you?

I've only been able to afford entry level automatics up to this point, but feeling the rotor rotate on your wrist is a great sensation. Even though the 2824-2 is a mass produced item with different level of finishings, it can be quite beautiful. In the watch I recently ordered there were three grade options to the automatic movement.

Base

TOP +$110 (I didn't want the optional onion crown)

TOP plus blued screws +$175

I went with the TOP. They used to sell a COSC version as well, which is made with chronometer parts and tested as such.

The hand winder in that Marine Original is huge compared, and is the same exact (well besides some finishing that Panerai does) to the no second hand Panerai in this thread. When comparing the auto to the hand winder the lack of rotor adds a ton to the appearance IMO. I also think it's more primal and business end than an auto...I just think the expensive of the watch should be directly proportional to the movement within. If not, it's just jewelry to me.

Agreed. The expense should relate more to the movement or some other "tool" features to make it really interesting I think. This is why Sinn watches interest me because it seems like they over engineer their watches with interesting or innovative features, even if some of those features are overkill. What makes a quality movement does frequently go over my head at this point though.

ETA: I might pick up a cheap vintage mechanical off of ebay just so I can screw around with the parts. Might learn something.

Sinn uses the same ETA movements. I initially wanted a Sinn and found which movement they used in the watch I liked, 556, then found it cheaper in another brand's case. Now I find the Sinn case size a bit small, and even then the dial is a bit small for it. I love the grey color and the texture, and even the nice bracelets...but really it made me fall in love with German watches. I'm a German watch fool. They, Germans, offer so many variations that most brands don't even think about. The 556 can be bought so many different ways. That's what really drew me to Stowa.

Check out the variations they offer on the same watch.

That's just perfect business to me. Don't make it until you sell it, then you can make exactly what each customer wants. You could contact them and have the limette hand put on the orange face too, anything you want...

I bought my first Ollech and Wajs auto off ebay for $50. The second hand fell off and I opened that bad boy up and jammed it back on with my mechanical pencil. The movement exploded later and I sourced another one from India for cheap. Size is a huge factor, both dial and case, in how much it 'fits' your eye.

That is the watch Bear Grylls wears if I am not mistaken. If not this Breitling then it is another one.

Can anyone tell me more about this brand? Only one dealer in Baton Rouge sell this brand, Anton's. Saw one other dealer this past week inside The Forum Shops at Caesar's Palace that sells it as well. Supposedly, only 80 dealers across the US are allowed to sell them.

Broke, which of the as Seiko monster series would you most recommend for a small-medium wrist? I feel like they may be much for my arm.

I have a $60 Fossil that is rose gold and steel that I get tons of compliments on. Looks just as fancy as a Rolex.

More affordables I would consider adding to a collection:

Maratac Mid Pilot

Rodina Small Seconds
