I would say once it no longer has a shape. To put it another way, no part of the beard should be translucent. If the edges aren’t mostly solid/opaque, trim it back until it is.

I walk a fine line between ruggedly handsome and borderline homeless. Biggest ROI is shaving the neck every few days.

Never trust a beard you can see through.
