Yep. And you can bet they sit in the front pew and are well-respected members of the community.

Picked up 2 small cans of tuna at the only store I could get to. A little mom and pop store. The tops of the cans were dusty as shite, but the price sticker was clean, no dust, $2.59/can.

This stupid recitation doesn't really apply to tile flooring, now does it. Joe Blow isn't buying 10x the amount of tile he needs just in case. But, morons see this stupid rationale and repeat it like mindless parrots.

The title of the thread is 'Price gouging' and not 'tile price gouging.'

But even if it were, let's say that every tile worker in the local area is busy working. I have tile installation skills and live on the other side of the state and decide I will travel to the area to work. Aside from the fuel I will burn getting there and back, I will have to spend money on a place to stay, food while eating out, and be away from my family who might incur costs for maintenance at my house while I am gone. Given all that, should I be able to charge more for my tile skills to recoup those costs, or the exact same as I charge back home or pre-flood?

If I am not allowed to charge more will I lose money traveling there to install tile?

If yes, what is my motivation to travel there and install tile?

Yes.

But some of the free market enthusiasts on TD want the government to step in and squash this situation.

low IQ economic people are going to be sad if government somehow make sure regular local wages are enforced and it takes 11 years to get their house rebuilt because laborers have no incentive to work extended hours. They sure as hell aren't coming from out of town to make regular BR wages.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Christians price-gouging Monday-Saturday then going to church on Sunday and preaching the good word.

Insurance cos will pay the going rate nationally. When they get inflated estimates, they will reject them. The client will be informed of the max the co. will pay. Most times the contractor will have to adjust or customer can elect to pay the difference. The labor rate can be negotiated but the material cost being gouged will not fly. Legitimate local contractors will have to deal with the ins. company in the future, they know this. As for the out of area scavengers, screw them. Whatever you do, make the contractor show you his proof of liability coverage, contractors license, and worker's comp. Cert of Ins. Do not cut corners or it is at your own peril. If they are from out of state, good luck getting them in court down the road. I am speaking from experience dealing with past events.

Sure, but the OP specifically addressed flooring companies raising tile prices.

How does this situation compare at all to your stupid Joe buying cans of food illustration? And again, the OP was talking about the price of tile, not the price of labor to install the tile. The price of skilled and even unskilled labor will go up after disasters like this. The price of necessary materials should not.

Watch out for the gypsy traveling handy man, he'll screw you and leave town.

They usually have North or South Carolina plates.

These parasites always come to Texas after a disaster then for months you hear of people getting charged 5 x the going rate for repairs with terrible work

Every single Christian I know involved in the cleanup process is volunteering their time. I think you meant non religious individuals might be charging higher than normal rates.

I would never hire an out of state contractor because they can pretty much take your money and run and suing them would be more hassle than it's worth if you could ever find them again. So many people in that industry change company names.

I see no such distinction in the OP.

Unless the necessary materials are in high demand and hard to replenish.

Turn their arse in. This is complete bullshite and they should pay the penalty. It is against the law to do that to the flood victims and only a POS would do it in the first place.

All of the local boys are dealing with their own issues and aren't standing in line for demolition work.

Sigh, there is no such thing as price gouging for tile work. There is a huge increase in demand for tile work, so the price goes up with it. That price increase will serve to increase the supply of labor, which will then drive down the price. Without the free market, you'd be waiting for 9+ months to have someone do your floors.

If you people want to flip out over "price gouging", pick a basic necessity like water or bread, not a service like labor.
