Have a situation where my 6 year old scratched the hell out of her prescription lenses today at school and they are completely ruined.

I went up to the dr office where we got them and they quoted me $400 without insurance to replace them since they are out of warranty.

Apparently we got the digital lenses with the anti glare blue thingy on them with all kinds of upgrades.

Me and my wife(no pics) have never worn glasses so i dont know what to do in this situation. Can i just go somewhere with the prescription and get new lenses and have someone put them in her existing frames? Any recommendations?

Also, when i get the new lenses, should i just get the basic or does she need all the upgrades like the old pair?

TIA

How blind is the kid? Is your kid sensitive to light? I’m blind as all get out and am sensitive to light so I need the additive. 400 is about what mine cost without insurance. My prescription is -6.50 so I get the thinner material too, that adds a few bucks.

Get your prescription from the Doc and go to Zenni.com and order her some for under $30.

Price one out like, but yes you should be able to upgrade to anything the box store could offer.

Interesting that it’s out of warranty. It sounds like y’all put her in Crizal with Prevencia(anti glare with the “blue thingy”). I’m assuming the manufacturer is Essilor. Those lenses have a 1 year warranty. They are also of excellent optical quality that can’t be matched for seven dollars and 24 cents online. Essilor will extend the warranty to 2 years but dont like us to advertise that, so it is unspoken. There are other manufacturers of anti glare lenses with the high energy blue blocking technology, but all of the reputable companies offer at least 1 year warranties. I can’t imagine that she was put in a knock off brand for 400 bucks. Tell me when they were purchased and what brand she was put in and I can probably give you some ammo to fight them with.

I also highly recommend Zenni.. i’ve worn glasses/contacts since 3rd grade, and used to spend $500 every few years for one pair.. i’ve ordered from Zenni for the last 5 yrs and i have prob 25 or 30 pairs, both eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses, and i’ve prob spent a TOTAL of $500 on all of them put together.. Zenni seems too good to be true, but it isnt.. are their frames made in China? Yep.. but so are the ones you pay several hundred bucks for at Pearle Vision, LensCrafters, etc.

Zenni. Com

Better than any glasses site I’ve ever been on.

ETA: The blue thingy and anti scratch coatings are generally included or minimal upgrades. Very sharp pricing for what you want.

Whichever route you decide to go, I hope you go back to the store that quoted you $400 and tell them what you ended up spending and who you bought them from.

Visionworks has a really good deal right now. I want to say they have a BOGO deal and clearance frames and discounted lenses. That's who I get my glasses through.

Don’t scrimp on anything for your kid

To add on this. I have 3 pair. One from my eye doctor, one from zenni and one from glasses.com. the zenni’s were the least expensive but are very cheap. glasses.com are quite good and a just a little cheaper than my eye doctors store. but the eye doctor had the best fit and easiest to adjust too

I tend to agree. I've been buying glasses online for 10 years and can handle various issues, but in this case it's parents who know nothing about glasses trying to fit a 6 y/o and provide after-purchase support like adjusting the frames and verifying the Rx for a patient who lacks experience and vocabulary to describe problems.

My glasses are my lifeline. I basically can't function without them, I use Zenni for all of my glasses except for one pair, which I got from Warby. I definitely wouldn't skip out on the antiglare coating. It makes a huge difference, specially at night.
