Hang in there, man- A friend of mine delivered her daughter at 28 weeks, and after 86 days in the NICU, she is home, happy and healthy. Keep us posted on how everything goes.

Also, while in the NICU, don't be afraid to ask if you can hold/touch your baby. Sometimes they may not want baby to be overstimulated so they may not let you hold her, but they will normally let you always touch her(you must wash your hands very well each time you enter the NICU though). And if for some reason you cannot, you can still just be there and talk to her. Touch and hearing a parent's voice is so much more important for baby's health than you realize. It will be scary seeing all the tubes and monitors, so feel free to ask the nurse what each thing does and why it's there. She/he will be more than happy to explain it to you. NICU nurses are trained to make sure the parents are included in the care as much as possible. That is your baby and you are never intruding when you want to visit and touch and talk to your baby. Please remember that. I've seen parents before be very timid and scared because they didn't want to get in the way of NICU staff or they were scared they would hurt their baby if they touched or held them the wrong way. Most NICUs allow parents to be there as much as they want to be(some even have private type rooms with sleeper sofas so parents can stay the night if they wish).

Just went through this with a very close family member. Pre-eclampsia and HELLP Syndrome. The baby was taken at 27 weeks. NICU these days is incredible. What they can do will amaze you. We were petrified as you are right now, but what can be done these days is nothing short of miraculous.
The toxins cleared out quickly and the BP came down, but that took some days and some medication for a week or so. Your wife will be okay. Delivery will take care of that.
We were told to be prepared for ups and downs in NICU, but so far so good. The baby was well under 2 lbs. Smaller than expected, but she has small babies, so we weren't surprised. There were smaller babies brought in since then.
A friend of the family reminded us that her baby was born earlier and he is now a strapping boy of 33 with children of his own.
Get ready for your "new normal" of many trips back and forth to the NICU while your baby is there. You're young and you can do this and make it work. My relative, the mother, and her husband just regrouped and accepted the new schedule as the way it is. They have a 2 year old, also, but lots of family in the area and support. Accept any help people offer whether it's meals or driving your wife to and from visits until she can drive herself. It will help. My relative went back to work as soon as the doc released her to do so in order to save up time for when the baby comes home. Don't know if your wife works, but if so, that maybe something to investigate.
I saw an article recently on twins born very early at about 12 oz each. I think they're 12 today and doing well.
It's scary as the dickens, but keep in mind all the preemies from way back when who did fine and how advanced medicine is today in handling your wife's condition and preemie babies.
Bring goodies to the NICU nurses. They like that.
Please let us know how it goes and keep us updated on how it's progressing after the birth. You have the prayers.

P.S. I was just reading that girls do better than boys. Ours is a boy and he breathed on his own when he came out. He was only on the vent for one day and has had the cannula thing out for a good while. He was born about 6 weeks ago. He's up to 3 lbs 3 oz. with all organs operational. Looked like a little old man with all the wrinkles, but he's finally sort of growing into his skin.

I'm glad to hear your story, too. The baby I talked about above was 1 lb 12 oz. We still have a long way in NICU, but it's all good.
At what weight did you get to take your son home. They told us maybe at 4 1/2 lbs. That still seems so small.

Thoughts and prayers. May all go well for wife and soon to be our newest tiger fan.
