Oh, and "die white people" painted on the monuments is perfectly cool, though.

More than likely written by a white person. Not exactly jaw dropping either

Watch white people call blacks the N word directly to their face and then try and equate some graffiti to that

But yes. White people are definitely the cause of all the problems around here.

Oh, so white people should ignore the message? I guess blacks should ignore the n-word then.

Watch all the black people call each other n-word to their faces and see how that word has little to no effect on their lives.

Nah, you want to think it's still 1950 so you can fulfill the narrative you've fallen for.

And yes, Scruffy does sympathize with the plights of the black community. A large majority of the children he sees and treats are black. Too often their lives are harmed and their futures are ruined, not by some oppression by whites or society, but by their own damned communities. It is an absolutely heart wrenching and depressing aspect of my job.

Then Scruffys question to me is even more perplexing

My comment is simple. The monument take down is a victory for their race. It's a symbol of a step in the right direction. But we couldn't come together and agree that it was the right decision. Instead white people are fighting against it, not because of the importance of a statue, but because the supporters are simply black. We can't even give them that victory. We can't even come out and acknowledge, hey, we need to do better as a nation.

Instead the opposition has been rooted in racial jockeying. "Hey we can't give them that!!!"

It certainly sounds that way. He refuses to recognize that the biggest speed bump for blacks is their self-destructive cultural norms.

Are you ok with using the same metrics to judge everything else in the city. Streets, building, monuments, etc?

Do you truly believe that black people don't oppress other black people?

Again I can recognize this & still recognize that there are blacks that are treated unjustly

No I don't think taking down statues will solve black on black crime. But if I can shake the hand of my black coworker, 45yr old father of 3 , no police record, and tell him I can see where he is coming from in regards to the statue removal, then that is a step in the right direction for me. Some insignificant statue isn't going to come between me and good people & the overall cause of greater good

It's sad that this is held up as some sort of accomplishment.

I'm an adult. Guess what? If I don't like it I adapt, deal with it and move on. Novel concept

But you just can't adapt to some historical statues that have stood in a city for hundreds of years?

Two, they did vote. The officials elected by Orleans parish; by these same taxpayers; spoke for the people that voted for them

Elected leaders don't just get to do whatever they want after they get elected. That's not how elections work at any level of government.

There are whites that are treated unjustly as well. Most of these cases have far more to do with class than race.

You can't do this regardless of whether or not the statue is removed?

Sounds like it can, since you can't communicate with your coworkers without the statue coming down.

I will say that these statues will have no bearing on the "greater good" but it will embolden those who demanded their removal to go after things that you don't deem to be offensive. Jackson/Jackson square will be next. You should be supporting the statue's removal as well as renaming the square. I hope you'll be vocal on that issue when the time comes.

I've never heard a black person complaining about statues in my 38 years in NOLA until Mitch brought this up. Even after it was mostly just white snowflakes like Lester

I don't give a shite either way if they are there or not. Which gives me better reason to back up people who they actually negatively affect.

They have ground to stand. Landrieus message was weak, no doubt. But the real people are fighting for a cause they believe in

Everyone remembers what sparked this but you apparently. Let me refresh it for you this was a political pandering spark initiated by one person with national ambitions who teamed up with the most racist individuals in New Orleans to help him achieve his goal. Nothing more and nothing less!

Hey like I said I can see both sides. I guess what is really said is that every person I have engaged in this thread has made a comment that leads me to believe that they do not respect African Americans. It's one thing to be anti removal, it's another thing to be anti removal & a bigot. It's hard to respect the opinions in this thread even when i came in open to doing so

You obviously do. By the way, the old pointing the finger at white people and calling them racist, blaming them for the black community problems, or blaming them for racial divide is getting old. Usually the person screaming "you're racist" is the person without an actual argument. You have no idea who I am nor how I feel.

I've never spent a single day in my life treating people from races unlike my own any different.

Please feel free to point out a single racist comment I've made on this site.
