It struck me as sort of a massive waste of money (how many billions did it ultimately cost?), for a mostly useless and not even really that attractive strip of greenspace. I mean, I guess it looks better than the freeway, but I just remember seeing it in person and thinking, 'Wait, y'all spent a few years worth of your whole city budget for THIS?'

It made a gigantic difference in the amount of useable land in some of the densest areas of the city and caused property valuations in the surrounding areas to skyrocket.

That was one small piece of the gigantic "Big Dig" project. And while the Big Dig was a huge financial boondoggle and took decades, it was a complete rebuild and restructuring of the interstate corridors through Boston.. not just one strip to create the greenspace that's shown.

It's a very misunderstood thing. In my experience, every soft drink machine is just a "Coke machine." Similarly, I've been in situations where you will pull up to a convenience store and someone will say "I'm gonna go get a Coke" and might walk out with something NOT a Coke. However, like you say, I've never once heard anyone order a Coke and a waitress say "What kind" unless it's the difference between say a Diet Coke and Coke.

In other words, it can be used as a generic descriptor for soft drinks (sodas, pops) in SOME settings, but it's certainly never such for all settings.

Yeah that was the most forest for the trees post I've ever seen here. There's a few posters here who will lose their mind over the "Coke" thing and they aren't even arguing over something that's real. Your post explains it well.

Off topic.

I realized the pics in OP are from Twitter (links to images not tweets). Does anyone using the iphone twitter/x app know the way to get the direct link to images in a tweet (at twimg) using the iPhone app?

I can share post to a browser and then get the direct link to an image, but doing the same actions in the app just copies the image to post the actual image instead of a link to it which doesn’t work here.

What... you've never been sitting around or traveling thinking to yourself... "self, I wonder how many counties away from the Mississippi river I am"?

Well, now you have to wonder no more!

The picture of the fire on the Mexican border is Nogales. The backside of the building that's on fire once housed a strip club called Lord Black's where I was robbed of all my money in the bathroom by a bouncer when I was 20. There is also a kindly old lady that lives up the hill that serves amazing tacos and cocaine from the living room of her house.

Just figured I'd share.
