Portland's homelessness crisis hit a fevered pitch Wednesday as a new coalition sued the city and Mayor Charlie Hales, calling Hales' pro-camping policy an illegal abuse of power because the City Council never signed off.

The lawsuit asks a judge to end widespread tent camping and sidewalk sleeping that's been tolerated since Hales in February unilaterally authorized a new "safe sleep policy" as a six-month experiment.

If successful, the lawsuit would force the City Council to officially greenlight Hales' plan or revoke it in favor of a compromise that includes public participation and stricter enforcement of existing anti-camping laws.

Safe has really been popular with the SJW crowd.

Safety Justice Warriors could be a good marketing ploy for the SJWs to consider. Own it like homosexuals did with queer and fig.

Good. The homeless problem in Portland is legitimately out of control. There are homeless people camping all over the place including directly in downtown. It's a public safety and health issue.

If those frickers spent as much time finding a real job and contributing to society as they did collecting tents, camping equipement and various junk they use to set up coumpounds, they wouldn't be "homeless"...

Side note, Didn't realize Steven Tyler was homeless...

If these names don't sum up the pussification of America, I don't know what does.

"Dignity Village?" It's like these bums have no shame...

No dreams and no dignity is why they are comfortable setting up shop wherever they want.

So these guys just piss and shite right out of their tents in downtown Portland?

I'm surprised there's not a huge homeless campground by downtown Baton Rouge. Seems like there are a ton by Greyhound on Florida.

They clear them out once every few months depending on event happening, but they always come back. The panhandling at major intersections and off ramps of the expressway is out of control though.

I see the same bums on the same corner everyday. There are a very small few that seem to have legit issues. However, somehow most of the regulars always have different clothes each day and never look particularly dirty. I watched two of them get dropped off in a Lexus SUV one afternoon. fricking lazy trash.

I'd be perfectly find with my local government finding some random property out of the way that the city owned and wasn't being used for anything useful and just letting these bums set up tents and do whatever they do. But to just say they have the freedom to live anywhere they want on public property is laughable. What's the point of civilized society anymore? If I was an actual contributor to society there, I would pitch a tent in the most disruptive place I could find. Like a big tent, that you can stand up in and stuff. I'd just set up an office space and work from there. Show up in a suit and shite. I need my safety too.

Yes

One of the nice, expensive bike paths on the east side of the city is covered in trash and piss from all the homeless people camping there.

They need to do what New York City did years ago and basically tell them to GTFO
