I can understand people that pay taxes, and contribute to their city being a better place to live, wanting to get rid of people who don't.

I was just in Portland for a week, rode bikes and walked everywhere and thoroughly enjoyed. It's my favorite city in the US. Is there a homeless problem? Yes...is there a homeless problem where I live in Dallas? Yes. Is there a homeless problem in most every major city? Yes. What is the solution? Reagan cut housing assistance for cities back in the 80s which exploded the homeless population especially on the west coast where it was already very expensive to live. Money is needed for affordable housing and mental health care.

Put them able bodied individuals to work! Trash pick-up, municipal cleaning, etc.. in exchange they get to sleep in shelters and free medical evaluation. Benefits both the homeless and the cities. Anyone who does not comply and tries to avoid periods of labor (truancy) gets arrested

That's a great idea, except most of them are mentally ill. Getting them to work will be like herding cats.

Several cities have tried it with some success

Being a sorry pice of shite is not a mental illness. While I’m sure there are some legit mentally ill people amongst them, the majority of them are only doing it because the can get away with it.

I agree... I want to say make them into a chain gang but you can't do that anymore. Something along the line of "chain gang" but more suited to today's working laws and ethical treatment

I think in this case, San Francisco is turning into Portland.
San Francisco has been like this before Portland.

quote:Portland is even worse than Seattle as far as homelessness, in my experience. And the homeless in Portland tend to be younger and more aggressive. In fact, I think Portland might even be helping Seattle with its homeless problem by offering even more incentives to them than Seattle does.
Portland is doing its best to become Seattle and, as we all know, Seattle is Dying.
That said, don't get me wrong, Seattle has a serious homeless problem.

Right. Lucky for me I’m not an able bodied piece of shite who chooses to lay on the street all day. One less thing.

It is a cool town but every year we get closer to the progressive Portland vibe. We have been here almost 20 years and it is a totally different place now. Not bad but hipster gentrification is like a disease. It starts with brewpubs (sweet!), morphs in to gentrification (new, vibrant stuff is nice so, ok) and ultimately ends up with all of the transplant shitheads deciding that they know best and totally displacing any indigenous goodness that is left. It is still good but I can smell the creeping progressive-ism...
I hear you brother. Austin is headed down the same path. Weird and funky has been replaced with hip and trendy. In some cases I believe that gentrification is a necessary evil, but when it begins to obliterate the things that make a place special, it's soul for lack of a better word, it becomes a problem. The west coast refugees move here and begin to ruin the place in the same manner that they ruined their home city/state. It's infuriating and heartbreaking at the same time.
Nashville it is also happening.

I had a neighbor that was evicted a few years ago and became homeless on the streets of Seattle. Coincidentally, I checked out her facebook page earlier today to see whatever happened to her and she's homeless in Asheville now. Looks like Asheville might be on the radar out here.

Well said.
I did have my vehicle broken into in Portland recently. Likely a homeless dude who wanted to take my backpack. Took about a grand in valuables but could have taken much more.
I think antifa protestors are a bunch of cowards, but to be honest I’ve been in the heart of Portland three weekends since this started and haven’t once come across them

If you know anything about mentally ill people, and you apparently do not, then you know they have problems "choosing" to do anything. Schizophrenia, which is common in homeless people, are really unable to "choose" to do much of anything. You may be able bodied but you are a piece of shite for flippantly condemning people you know nothing about.
