Pretty shameful on her part. Sadly I think there are a lot more people that would spend that money than call it an error.
if i was in africa, i would leave the fricking country and never come back.

I'm glad you know what her debts are. Most people if they are given a million dollars would initially go on a bit of a spending spree. She probably also figured they would take back what was left when they discovered the mistake. The posters on the OT are clearly the greatest humans on earth based on the self-aggrandizing and holier-than-thou attitude displayed. The Catholic church should just go ahead and beatify all the regular posters.
All of your nonsense is, of course, negated by the fact that this stupid bitch knew that wasn't her money from the moment she realized it was in her account. Your stupid "she probably figured the government would just be happy to get back whatever was left when they realized their mistake" is a prime example of the thoughts of a person the would would be better off euthanizing. You are stupid sir.

You a poor south african, and get $1.8 and you stay in town?
She could have been set for life in most African countries.

Am I better than this shitty person? Probably. I wouldn't spend that money in the first place being that I'm educated enough to know someone will come looking for it. I'll listen to you though and feel bad about her debts as she goes shopping and partying with her newfound money

Hmmm. She's a college student? Sure about that?

So, maybe I should respond to that email from the African guy who says he wants to send me a few million dollars.

Uh... if most people had a million dollar mistake made on their paycheck or loan payout or whatetever, they would NOT go on "a bit of a spending spree" because they aren't that stupid. If they are, they deserve to go to jail for theft.

Truth
I had $30k show up in my checking account once when I was OT poor. I was sweating until Bank One finally took it back.

I'm not going on some major binge, but if I were given $1mil today I'd definitely buy a few things I wouldn't normally buy before figuring out what to do with the rest is all I mean.

Your white knighting for this moron is proof of the paucity of intellectual honesty of SJW's in these discussions when they arrise.
I'm not "white knighting". I'm speaking about how 99.9% of earth would react to being given a large sum of money. Anyone who says "I'd just invest every dollar" is either already rich enough that $1mil means nothing, or a liar.

euthanizing them...cool.

When did I say you should feel bad for her? She was a moron for blowing it. But people saying "if i got $1mil I wouldn't party at all, I would just put it into a well diversified portfolio" are ridiculous. If I discovered that amount in my account one day, I don't think I'd say anything ( maybe I would, can't really say until it happens) but I definitely wouldn't touch it for a very long time.

agreed. I wasn't clear. I'm saying if you were actually given $1mil, not gained it through a mistake. I was talking about the guy claiming he would just pay off debt and invest the rest. Maybe that's true, but nearly everyone would buy SOMETHING they've been wanting: a new truck, a boat, a pile of cocaine, etc. Being mostly responsible is one thing, but acting like you wouldn't touch a dime of some new found wealth on something for entertainment is bluster.

There is a vast difference between being given money and knowingly spending money that was obviously mistakenly deposited in your account. I've had several thousand show up my accounts that I want expecting. I waited until I could confirm where and why that money was put there before I touched a penny of it. Then it all went into my savings and investing accounts.

Third option: they are aware enough and educated enough to know money is a tool. $1M dollars to me means some serious time with Scottrade will be spent before anything else. There are some poor people who can handle sudden wealth responsibly but there are very few stupid people that can manage it; professional sports and hip-hop artists are proof of that.

This. A $1 mistake might not be tracked down, a $1M mistake most certainly will. If you don't think someone will see the money returned, and you spend it, it's no different than stealing it.

That's on the idiots running financial services, not her.
Knowing they'd catch it eventually I would have withdrawn a shite ton and stashed it somewhere then spent the rest.
My bank fricked up once and entered 32,000 in my account instead of the 3200 I deposited. I didn't spend it though cause that amount id be forced to repay. Took em 4 days to catch it

I had a similar instance happen to me for about $40k but it was a payroll mistake. My wife called me to ask what's up with checking account. I called payroll at my company and evidently they had done this with quite a few people. Took them three weeks to pull it back out with a couple of phone calls from me.
I knew that money wasn't mine so I wasn't going to spend it and reap the consequences.

You have pretty low standards if you think identifying this as an error and refusing to spend the money is some sort of miracle.
You must know a lot of shitty people.
