Older they get more issues you have
In south la you may have to fix settling issues especially if the concrete around it buckled over time
Maintenance costs for older pools can be expensive and once your kids are gone it won’t get used as much

all were already built when we bought the houses.

This has been a war with the wife in the last 2 home purchases we made. Every house we bought was on her end, we will build a pool at some point and on my end was the frick we are. I actually won both wars but we just closed on hopefully our last home purchase for a long time and it came with a pool. It checks all the boxes and I didn't have to front the cost of a new build on a pool.

Not at all. We have young kids and use ours all the time, though I have invested a good bit in landscaping and a cabana to fill out the backyard experience.

I have a salt water pool and it’s not that much work, but I don’t have trees near the pool. I check my levels once a week, add some muriatic acid, maybe some baking soda or salt and toss the robot in to clean. The biggest cost is replacing equipment like the salt cell or pump. They last a while, but eventually go out. I recommend keeping your filter cartridges clean and replacing them at regular intervals.

Love my pool.
I make my kids vacuum it once a week.

Smaller is better IMO.

I regret mine everyday now. It was great when my kids were preteen. Now, it just sits there eating cash everyday. Maybe gets used 5 to 6 times a year.

Just remember that you'll be dropping $7-10k+ every 10 years to get it re-plastered. It's just something people don't think about. There are finishes that last longer but the initial price is way more than $10K.

All of that said. We bought a house a few years ago with a pool that is coming up on the re-plaster phase. We're going to upgrade the lighting and decking on this project so I'm bracing myself.

I did something different this winter. I never closed my pool; I ran my pump when below freezing weather was expected and kept my pool chlorine in the lower ppm range.

I never close mine either. There is a massive oak tree right next to me that is the bane of my existence in the fall, but once it's dropped all of its leaves I'm on easy street.
I actually love scooping and brushing the pool for 10-15 minutes a day when I get home from spending all day in an office

Bought a house with a pool last summer. Swam almost every day. Outdoor TV to watch LSU games from the water.

That said, would not pay the cost to build one. Spent about $25k to remodel this year and is almost done with new pebble finish, new tile, new lights, etc. Cannot wait for it to be done. No kids yet, but they will owe me one for this.

We have an above ground. Had it for 15 years now. It's actually been pretty easy overall to care for. Wife wanted it, I really didn't, but it's not been a big issue at all.

We went with the power ionizer and it's been overall very easy to deal with.

Same here....and no one enjoys the pool more than this 90 pounder.

My wife wants a pool. When we go to the neighborhood pool, she lays on a chair and rarely actually swims. Women are illogical.

My dad put a pool in at his house about 15 years ago. It’s a relatively small pool in a really nice and shady spot in the back yard. The shade is outstanding for keeping the water nice and chilly, even during the hottest months — but he said it’s a ton of work keeping it clean.
I have trees surrounding my pool. It's nice for shade, it's a pain to keep clean. I have a guy who comes by and cleans it weekly, I wouldn't want to deal with all that nonsense.

We built a shade structure on the west side of the pool. The fence helps keep the pool partially shaded in the mornings and the structure keeps it shaded in the afternoon.
