Ponchatoula teachers are staging a walkout right now

"Our members are telling us that they will no longer physically intervene to break up a fight," said Tangipahoa Federation of Teachers President Dina Esquinance. "They aren't going to stand and watch. They will certainly use their voices, they'll send a student to the office to get help, they'll use the intercom to request help, they'll yell down the hallway, but they simply aren't going to become physically involved any longer. They cannot afford to."

While it's not brave, IDK what people expect from them. Some kids fight, someone needs to break it up or a kid could get seriously injured, then the parents sue the school and the teachers present lose their jobs. If they do happen to try to intervene and end up hurting a kid in the process, they could end up losing their job or get hurt.
Side note: We had this vice principal in high school that would intentionally throw his face in the middle of a fight so one of the kids would hit him and get expelled for it. Dude got hit a lot

Honestly this is one of the more reasonable sounding reasons for a walk out I've heard when it comes to teachers. Caveat being I don't know anything about the area.

Can't blame them. We worry about school shootings and needing SRO's for that when this happens everyday. I won't get in the middle of fight in my restaurant. Nothing good will come of it.

I agree. You only see the the aftermath of the fight where the teachers are trying to break it up without context and it becomes a which hunt.
I used to have a teacher in high school that was this short man but he was an absolute badass. He was a WWII vet with a CIB, purple heart, and bronze star with a V device. He didn't hesitate to break up fights and once had to throw a punch himself. Used to see him haul off students to the principals office in headlocks. This was back in the mid-90s, had he done this today there would be a social media firestorm calling for them man's head.
It's getting stupid.
