This would also mean if this survey was representative it would need some whack job’s “43% - it just hasn’t hit any of my friends yet” estimate mixed with some good old fashioned TD 0.0001% to get a 9% mean.
In the mean time the highest CFR ever produced was in the 2% range (and trending down with confirmation of treatment and asymptomatic cases). And the max estimated % of population to get infected was in the 60-70% range, so the maximum possible defensible fear mongering would be an extra 1.5% of the population knocked off.
Note: since human beings don’t (on average) live in excess of 100 years, 1% of us were going to bite it anyway this year. So “full panic” involved 2020 being roughly twice as risky as your average year, but not much more.

I don’t believe many, if more than a handful that have no grasp of numbers, really believe 1 in 11 people in America died.
I do believe the phrasing of the question could be weird resulting in folks saying a few percent as a guess at the death rate of those infected Or maybe percent that contracted it
and also that some people randomly spit out a number with no grasp on what they said
I’d be shocked if a substantial number truly believed 9% if they understood both the question and the meaning of their answer though

Agree. Here’s the raw data. The question was:

The mean for Republicans was 10.5%, compared to 10.4% for Democrats and 6.9% for independents. It was part of a series of questions - how many have had it, how many currently have it, how many have fallen badly ill, and how many have died - and my suspicion is that people got confused about the meaning of the question at some point.

A majority of people are dumb as rocks. I heard a woman say that she votes based on how a person looks, nothing else. This is just one example. Let’s hear some others!
