There are calls for action after a police involved shooting in Lafayette this past weekend.

Some are questioning why police shot a man in the back as he ran away.

It happened Saturday night on Souiler Street.

Police were there to serve a warrant when officers say a group of men ran away. Police say one of them, Tevin Lewis, pulled out a gun, so they opened fire hitting him in the back.

But witnesses say Lewis wasn't pointing that gun at anyone, and was running from police when he was shot.

Lafayette Police are asking for patience.

"The investigation is coming along. As you've said before we're being shadowed by Louisiana State Police and also advised by the Federal Bureau of Investigations," says Cpl. Paul Mouton with the Lafayette Police Department.

The point of contention is many witnesses say Tevin Lewis was running for his life, not threatening anyone else's.

quote:

"So even if he had a weapon somewhere on him that they may claim, at the point at which he was shot, he was not posing a threat to the officers," says Takuna El Shabazz, President of the Community Council of Black Elders in Lafayette.

Out of an abundance of caution I keep my gun in my pants while running from the police.

For some reason I don't see this turning into a Ferguson or Baltimore-like event.

I was wondering why I saw every cop in town with their lights on that day. The police in Lafayette are some of the nicest I've met, and I've met a lot.

Apparently there is a home security video of the incident that doesn't look good for the Lafayette PD.

I for one, would like to thank the officer that capped this stupid mf'ers arse!

Thank you for taking this POS off the streets. We sure welcome any other gun wielding thugs to feel free to wave them around while police are in pursuit.

That is interesting, especially because video home security systems are not exactly prevalent in the areas where incidents like this tend to occur.

Additionally, what kind of name is Takuna?

What's great about this shooting and the "call for action" from the AA community is that they are completely ignoring the shooting at the Nawtside football game the other night where a cheerleader was shot in the parking lot after the game, then hit by a car.

when are you idiots going to realize that black civilians shooting other black civilians is nowhere near the same thing as a police officer who swore an oath to protect the civil world, shooting a civilian unwarranted?

I really don't care who is shooting who to be honest. Just stop picking which lives you care about more.
