This morning I received scary news that the 8 year old daughter of a lifelong family friend fell in their pond while playing at night in the backyard with friends and came incredibly close to drowning.

With summer approaching, I wanted to remind all of the baws and bawette’s of the OT that swimming is a lifesaving skill. My Grandfather and Dad taught me, and as much as they hated me at the time, I taught Mrs. Cotten’s nieces and nephews as soon as they were old enough.

Ive read through various sources that close to half of the US cannot swim. With a majority of the OT being in Louisiana, you’re never far from a body of water that can turn deadly quick.

If you have the ability, teach them yourself, enroll them in swim lessons, or whatever it takes but I highly encourage you to teach your children to swim as well.

Outside of some extremely rare exceptions involving health and access, anyone who doesn't make sure their children are taught how to swim are bad parents.

I don’t really get how people can’t swim... dogs are born naturally knowing how to swim

That’s scary. A child should be a strong swimmer by the age of 8.

Not true. My dog sunk to the bottom of the pond when he fell off the pier one day. I had to jump in.

He eventually learned once I took him to a beach.

8 and not able to swim with a pool in the backyard and playing by it at night??

glad the tragedy was avoided, but should have never happened.

I have very close friends that lost a 2 yr. I don't think I could continue with something like that. 100% the worse funeral I ever witnessed. Tears me up just typing about it.

That's horrible. I don't understand why this isn't something every single parent does. Our kids did the infant swimming stuff, and the first things they learn are how to float, get to the wall, and "wall walk" to safety. They can do this at a ridiculously young age.

Every YMCA with a pool has these classes, and I bet it's even free to "some people."

our school district offers free swimming lessons to all 2nd graders every year

my 2nd grader is going to them next week (she already knows how to swim very well), but we signed her up just so she could swim with her friends and have fun

I imagine most school districts have similar programs these days

To be fair to the parents, falling in a pond at night while likely wearing tennis shoes is much different than a swimming pool during the day.

I know several people that learned how to swim by their dad throwing them in the deep end. They wouldn't have let them drown, but the kid thought they would at the time.

A lot of times it's not so much that they don't know how to swim. They just panic and don't know what to do because "they can't swim"

I remember being shocked at the number of guys that couldn't swim 2nd day of Navy boot camp. I don't think they really taught them to swim, just to keep them afloat.

In addition: If the red flag is up at the beach, stay at the pool with the kids.

Dad did 22 years Active in the Navy. I learned to swim on the Corpus Christi base (as a kid, they had an awesome slide for their pool).

I remember asking him as a young kid one time if anyone he worked with couldn’t swim and he said “No, but there were a lot who couldn’t when they joined” I asked if they had swim lessons and he laughed out loud and said “No, no swim lessons Cotten. They taught them realllll QUICK!”
