Well of course they are going to make sure their own children are taught well during the shutdown. They probably demand a STEM curriculum also, so their children don't have to grow up and teach.

So, of my 120 students (at an A school), approximately 30% completed their work. I went back and forth with many parents about the incomplete work, and they still couldn’t get their children to do anything. Really unimpressed with those parenting skills.

We went into this ready to simulate the actual classroom experience. I spent two days planning about a week of my ELA classes for distance learning. It takes so much more time because instead of teaching it live, videos must be recorded, all feedback given digitally instead of walking around in the classroom, etc.

Before even one week of digital learning was complete, we were told to scale back to 30 minutes a day because parents were complaining. Then, a week later, please post 30 minutes of work every other day. More complaining. I know myself and many other teachers became so annoyed because we were ready to rock this 100%. We know parents were still working. But we also know we have used all of these programs before, and at least for my school, nothing was “new”.

We all wish we were in our classrooms teaching and interacting with your children. It wasn’t a vacation.

my sis-inlaw is a principle at an elementary school, and her husband a teacher at another - and they also experienced that kind of push-back.

neither have ever asked be treated any differently than before the shite hit the fan.

They still getting a 12-month salary to work 9 months (7 months this year)?

Oh yeah and I’m guess most have job security despite the pandemic. Everyone is having to adjust to working from home, why are they special?

We taught my son that when he was 3. At home. While having full time jobs away from home. For zero money. Learn to parent better.

given what most teachers earn a year, this should be the last thing to complain about.

considering teachers have had to scramble to adapt to the situation, when the vast majority of school systems had no way yo accommodate the change over quickly and efficiently, and had no infrastructure plan to handle it, i think they do deserve some credit.

do i think they need to be considered heroes like the fine military people who gave everything for our freedom? frick no, and those out there that want to be treated that way are ridiculous - but to dismiss teachers outright for what they have dealt with is fundamentally wrong too.
