If you look at Rock’s eyes in the closeup shot after the hit and while Smith is yelling at him you can see his comedian brain going a million miles a minute as he runs through all the brutal funny comebacks he could say, but he then manages to dial it back and realize staying quiet is the best course of action

Chris Rock's expression and awkwardness and Smith's cursing kinda makes me believe it was real. It was too awkward. Then the acceptance speech was another level of awkwardness above that.
You had someone committing assault on live TV and then getting an award and trying to be virtuous. It's a terrible look.

Can we at least acknowledge that Chris didn’t miss a beat, took the slap, laughed it off and just kept his composure? Say what you want about his comments towards Will’s wife, but he showed some pretty big brass ones right there.

Chris Rock handled that as well as anyone could ever do. He moved on to continue his monologue. If anyone had tuned in 10 seconds after the exchange you wouldn’t know anything had gone on.
