I know at the site I'm at knowing somebody rarely matters. Years ago it did but that ended in 2001.

Idk about a golden ticket, but it gets your foot in the door and puts you in consideration. You still have to interview well enough to beat put however many hundreds of other applicants.

Nepotism is rare in the plants around the area I grew up in also.

I meant it as more of a culture shock that it's like it here than as a not-so-subtle brag.

Will you be okay with staying within a certain area for 12 hrs at a time? Seriously, a friend of mine, who is an operator, told me he seen a lot of boys watch their marriage crumble while they are working nights... Especially during the weekends. They get text from someone saying they saw their wife out with a certain person and he gets pissed, but he can't do anything about it. So if you have a woman who will wander around while you are not home, you might want to rethink it.

you might want to rethink a lot more than 12-hour shifts if this is the case

A p-tech cert is not a guarantee to get hired but here, it's necessary to even get looked at. They won't hire a dumbass just because he has the certificate.

12hr shift is not your problem at this point.

I agree but I guess its the idea that they can't get away from work and go "deal with it". Yeah, she isn't wandering around because he is working night shifts..

To be fair, this guy said he saw this be an issue with two people, who eventually lost their job (they allowed their personal life get involved in their work life), but in other cases it is a jealous husband. If their wife/girlfriend goes out and he is at work, he gets all worked up with the idea his wife/gf is out somewhere and he isn't around to make sure anything doesn't go on..

You nailed it bro. I would guess out of the guys I work with, myself included, 75% have been thru at least 1 divorce. It's not that we married all whores it's just the plant life is very hard on a marriage.

What is the average salary of an experienced operator?

Usually hourly.

Depends on the site. Will range from 60k-250k depending on site, overtime, years of service.

I would say average base is 70k and average with OT is 100-120 across the industry in this area of the country. Probably the highest average or one of the highest just because of competition.

How long does the process usually take from testing to interviewing to finding out if hired or not?

Usually 2-3 months. It's a very slow process.

You're telling me I can make $250K in south Louisiana being an operator? If this is true, you're gonna find yourself with a ton of competition very very soon from even experienced engineers in the area.

In fact, I would learn the lazy man's trade if I'm going to be pulling mid 100s with overtime out the box.

I'm not butt hurt at all, but if I can make that much money cooking eggs and bacon, then I'm in the wrong profession and I'll just go apply there.

Very few jobs in LA you have the chance to make $120-$150 out the box. I'm just saying, if that's true they about to get some competition.

There are a lot of plant Baws laughing at your student loan debt in this thread while in their f250 and you don't even know it, while trying to sound educated.

I don't even know what you mean by try. That's kind of an eithed or scenario. You're educated or you're not.

And it's a rarity in the US do folks with an associates degree make over 50K, so I would take the time to thank the Lord upstairs for being lucky to have a job than laughing at someone who's more marketable.
