Our youngest went to Ole Miss .. yes they’re Ole Miss but I can’t say enough good things about the university. From before we visited until she graduated, everyone was amazing.
We never ever worried about safety.
I will say it’s expensive to visit if you go on game weekends .. and housing after freshman year can be pricey as well. But that may be everywhere.
Visit them all and get a vibe for the areas.
Have fun!!

What is he wanting to pursue for his major?
The most important question af all, IMO…I am suprised it took to this point in the thread to get here.

There was a shooting in front of him at the parking lot of Spruce while his was packing his car to evacuate a hurricane. He saw a 15 year old kid get gunned down outside of Freds. He had a close friend gang-raped and left for dead on the road. Had another acquaintance through a professional club get shot up near Red Stick Social (which is where his fraternity hosts many events) ...
Six years in the military and 25 yrs working in downtown Shreveport and I've never seen anything like this even once. This kid's living in a Tarantino movie.

Make sure and visit the University of Phoenix.

He's a B student, private catholic school in Houston. Athlete and has a job. Terrible ACT scores, but we are in tutoring for that now to bring them up (think low 20's). I've got Ole Miss, Miss State, OU, Texas Tech.. What options am I missing?
Is he a hard worker/someone who could own his own business some day?
Because if he is, he’s probably a prime candidate for a trade, something like an HVAC tech, plumber, or an electrician. Lean the trade his first 5-7 years while moonlighting business classes at CC to where when he’s 25-30 he can start his own business and grow it.

When was this? I don’t remember seeing news stories that remind me of these and I try to follow the news closely. I live in St. George and am stunned how bad the area around Tigerland has become

You shouldn't be. When JL's Place, or whatever was closest to the railroad tracks started attracting LSU players by the load (2003 ish), it was obvious where the whole hood was going.

I follow the market up there closely. Plan on keeping my sub 3% homes there and renting and may move back there. I like Oxford and love the Square. WIth that said, I am not being hyperbolic with the housing issue. I would get on Facebook and Zillow and be following carefully. Many students live over 20 miles outside of Oxford in small towns because they cannot afford the city limits.

OM Alum here:
If full rate out-of-state tuition is over $26k (excluding fees and any living expenses), I would only recommend that only someone who got into the Croft Institute for International Studies, the Honors College, the pre-pharmacy program or is planning on majoring in accountancy consider attending.
Unless you are doing a specific program (like those mentioned above or otherwise), OM is an average state school. I'm not confident that the attractive things about the town, SEC sports, and social life make up for that.
Then again, there is a large percentage of kids who go to OM to have fun and just pass their classes to check the degree box. A motivated and disciplined kid who can take advantage of academic and career development opportunities will likely stand out.

I’d love to buy something and have our kid pay rent to us .. that way the crazy increases wouldn’t cause as much stress.

Sounds like your son would fit in nicely at Nicholls State ( Harvard on the Bayou)

quote:My sons had several friends in this position. They ended up leaving college and going to the nearest technical or community college to get a trade. Don’t rule this out. It’s not a bad deal depending on what your son’s major in college will be. Some majors really don’t pay as well as a trade. Just a thought.
B student but “terrible” test scores? That looks bad for either his HS or him or both. Your question “what are his options” can’t be answered but the question of “what are not his options” certainly can

Out-of-State: Auburn, New Mexico State, Arizona, Tulsa, Oral Roberts, Southeastern Louisiana, Delta State, Kentucky, Louisville, West Virginia.
Delta State was a good school, it has gone down biggly over the past few years.

I'm concerned the young man may be with the wrong crowd or have the worst luck in America. I did 32 years AF (several deployments) and work in DT Jxn, MS (1000000 x worse than Shreveport) and never seen anything close to what this young man has experienced.
