My son is 18 and graduates high school this week. He never wanted to go to college, so he took a number of "real world" courses (welding, mechanics, construction). He's been offered a job west of Fort Worth on a pipeline.

Can someone tell me what entry level workers do on a pipeline crew?

Lay pipe

Honestly no idea. Probably will work under some experienced guys fetching them tools and materials until he demonstrates his ability to learn/perform other skills

Haul shite back and forth from the truck
Get made fun of
Drive while the welder sleeps or makes fun of you
Grinds welds
Picks up heavy shite while getting made fun of

Just stuff like that

My Pops forced me to work as a pipe-fitter helper the summer after highschool... Is he really sure that he doesn't want to go to college?

The exact result I'm hoping for.

What type job was he offered?

It’s mainly laborers, operators, and welders. A newer guy is most likely gonna be a laborer, welder helper, or oiler( like an operator helper).

It’s good money but a tough lifestyle.

Unless he thoroughly hates school, he'll definitely will be thinking about it during the course of the job.

Only problem is that he'll have more money than he's ever had before.

Work like that will teach the value of labor more than anything else.

He'll either find a niche and do well for himself or quickly decide college isn't so bad. But it's not a bad thing for a young fella to experience.

I’ve seen really smart kids get offered jobs while in college that only require high school degrees. They start out making $35-45,000 a year and to a 18-20 year old, you’re filthy rich. But then they never go back and are stuck in lower paying jobs or have their options severely limited.

That’s a real danger

the key here is to get a degree, any degree. Once he has the experience, that degree will be a check box to move into manager type positions later in his career on the operations side of things

Its a physical job with a very high pay ceiling. Honestly it seems like a great "career" move for an 18 year old unsure of his future.

You’re right. But once you stop going to school, it’s really hard to start back up. It’s best to just never stop until you’re absolutely done

Right. But if he gets the degree first, he may not get this position. If he can somehow do both (hell take 8 years to graduate), that'd be ideal.

Certainly spot on, but at the same time I don't think someone like OP's son should go to college with no idea on what to study.

Op, the only thing I'd recommend is telling your son to work on finding a career field and then planning on getting into management. You don't want to be a plumber or welder your whole life, but there's nothing wrong with being in welding or plumbing, you want to own a welding company or a plumbing company. But the only way to get there, is by being a plumber or welder.

Maybe a summer on the pipeline will make him change his mind about college.

I did two stents in Iraan, Texas and nearly lost three fingers.

Went back to college and made straight A's.

He should look at Flow Back work in Midland, them boys are banking 100k+

It’s gonna be hot as the frick work but he will make decent money.

The hours will probably suck but at 18, i doubt he will care.

Great experience

relax dad, your son will be amazed how smart you are and appreciate your attempt to teach him AFTER hearing all the same things you attempted to teach him only to hear about it from so many on the job at a much higher volume and more colorful ways...
