This happened to me the first time I ever flew and it was awesome. Hasn’t happened since then , unfortunately.

I'd assume it has more to do with wake turbulence, air traffic, and ground control than the skills of your pilot, but I'm not a pilot, so I'm probably wrong.

I'm always a little worried about wake turbulence when they do that.

The AA flight that crashed in Queens a month after 9/11 got caught in the wake turbulence of a fully loaded JAL 747 that had just taken off. It was the co-pilots fault they crashed but still I would prefer clean air on takeoff.

I've never been a fan of flying.

We went to Maui in 2007. When we were leaving, the pilot gets on the intercom and says something like "Look. The runway here is very short. So I'm going to have to gun it."

And he wasn't lying. Dude put on the afterburners and I felt like we went almost vertical when he took off.

When the plane made its rapid ascent, I inadvertently let out a loud "Mutha fricka!" and the whole plane started laughing.

I’m pretty sure it’s whatever ATC/departure tells them to do.

That's my favorite. Pair that with the pilot making an announcement that you're going to land earlier than expected and you know it's going to be a good day

Sometimes you catch the early flight home from San Diego and a couple of nude people jump out of your bathroom blindfolded like a goddamn magic show ready to double team your girlfriend...

Hell yeah. After a diversion for weather to Knoxville (and being refueled by a guy on a truck I swear was smoking), the pilot calmly came on and said he "needed to drive it like he stole it," in order to not miss the landing slot in ATL. The crowd, who he'd previously placated with free liquor, cheered, and he pushed that MD-88 to full throttle as we were seemingly starting the turn from the taxiway.

Provided they’re actually on a runway and not a taxiway.

This happened on the last flight that I took last year. We're doing the U turn onto the runway and halfway through it the pilot guns the engines and we whip around right into take off. It definitely took me by surprise and I'm thinking "this motherfricker ain't wasting any time". Glad to know this is somewhat normal

Happens frequently at DCA due to a single main runway used for most landings and departures - there is always a queue of inbound flights on or near final approach so when they get on the runway it's go time.
