Wait, giving tours on the Kidd is a punishment for DWI?

It should be an honor for a deserving person, not a punishment for screwing up.

I must have toured that ship a hundred times growing up, and it never got boring. I love the U.S.S. Kidd.

I took a bunch of B & W photos of that even and have them around my house somewhere. We were promised an air show, but got nothing but a flyover by some T-28's and T-6's. Does anybody remember when you could rent out the Kidd (and Samuel Clemens) for parties? Went to several on both.

The Navy set aside three Fletcher-class ships for use as memorials; The Sullivans (DD-537), Cassin Young (DD-793), and Kidd. Louisiana congressman William Henson Moore selected Kidd to serve as a memorial for Louisiana World War II veterans. Kidd was towed from Philadelphia and arrived in Baton Rouge on 23 May 1982, where she was transferred to the Louisiana Naval War Memorial Commission. She is now on public view there as a museum vessel, and she hosts youth group overnight encampments.

USS Kidd dropping depth charges.

I liked this paint scheme on her.

I know I've posted this already but i'll say it again. Old time friend of mine, grew up with him and his siblings off of Millerville RD. here in BR. He's about to command the latest USS Kidd.

How damn cool is that?

I actually have a VHS recording of the WBRZ coverage of the arrival. Baton Rouge was in quite an excited frenzy.

Simpler times, I guess.

You still can! You and 19 friends can camp overnight for a minimum of only $500

There’s something awesome about watching those old battleships plow through the waves with smoke pouring out the stacks.

Looks cool as frick

Not giving tours, no. But, working on the Kidd, yes. I polished every piece of brass on that ship in 1997 for 32 hours one week to fulfill my obligation to the community... Where did I get the idea to do it? When I was booked in 1996, I shared a cell with a dude who had committed a murder a few months ago and he worked for a few years on the Kidd in maintenance. He got mixed up in drugs and will ever see the light of day again (LINK ). He told me that he used to supervise community service guys as part of his job and gave me his contact there. He was a super nice kid and it just shows you some of the dark paths that drugs can lead you down. I even remember at that point him taking full responsibility for it and even said that he would probably get the death penalty, which he did, but it was reduced to life a few years later.

Maybe at some point.

But that was my first job in Baton Rouge in the mid-90s, mostly a High-School/College workforce.
