Bend, Oregon - the nicest town its size in America. It's like an idealized version of the 1950s, plus outdoor activities galore and great breweries. I have been obsessed with it since I visited and would move there in a heartbeat.

All of which are in driving distance from Honolulu. Besides, unless you rent a house or condo, there's not a lot of places to stay outside of Honolulu. Turtle Bay and maybe a couple of places in K-Bay.
Ko'olina is definitely better than Honolulu, or you could rent a house or condo in Kailua.

Ko'olina is not better than Honolulu by any stretch, there are a few little lagoons to play in and a bayside bar. Other than that to the north of you there is a big arse power plant and a good place to get stabbed. Below you is a 2 hour drive due to H-1 traffic during peak, and the hotels would be comparable at best.

Yeah, renting a place outside of Honolulu is the way to go. Same shite you find anywhere and Waikiki Beach sucks. Stick to the North Shore or the area around Bellows Beach.

It wasn't nearly as crowded when I went. I didn't stay in Honolulu or Ko'olina, though.

San Diego: perfect weather, beautiful girls, great food, and picturesque beaches. It's basically paradise (hence why it's so expensive).
Chicago: summer weather is perfect, tons to do with museums, baseball games, music, architecture, the lake, ect. L-Train and bike shares make cars unnecessary.
New York: hot in the summer, but still tons to do, great public transportation, too much to take in on one trip
Austin: hot, but great food and great music scene, but rent a car. Also, check out neighboring Texas Hill Country for wine.
Portland: it's like San Diego, but trade mountains for beaches and hot girls for craft beer. GREAT trip to rent a car and drive around the surrounding area. See the ocean in cliff side Astoria, see the water falls around the Columbia River Gorge, ect. Tons of natural beauty to take in.

Portland the city is very cool. Lots to do and eat and drink, fun, wacky layout with tall heights on one side of the river and a flat expanse on the other with a compact downtown between them, miles and miles and miles of the nicest old craftsman houses with great gardens and roses galore. Great place to just walk around. Outdoor activities abound just outside of town along the Columbia River. However, I thought the people sucked. Very detached, airheaded, slow, kinda rude... not at all engaged, or concerned about providing good service like I am used to anywhere in Texas. When I first got there I was like "I want to move here!" but after a few days I was like "What is the deal with the people here? Why are they so...detached?"

That's just a PNW thing. Probably a result of us spending 8 months of the year sitting in our houses.

Maybe it's the pot?
I dunno. At times I wanted to yell "wake up!"
