Ha, you think we could keep our noses out of an up and coming super power going to war with one of our former territories?

China doesn't give a shite about the Philippines. They just want to control the South China Sea

He may not have the muscle China does but he did make a major move and basically told China to suck it.

He has balls. I kind like the move he made. He didn't play around, he just took the island.

That is a strong move.

Duterte talks a lot of sh*t but also backs it up.

The man is literally leading an ethnic cleansing of drug dealers in the Philippines.

Imagine what he'd do to clean up the streets of Chicago or Nola...

Explain why? I know we needed the Philippines in WWII for an air base to attack Japan but that isn't really relevant anymore. If this guy and China decide to duke it out, why exactly do we have to go help?

1. Because we are obligated by treaty.

2. Abrogating our presence in the region is giving China even more military and economic control by default. It's telling all the countries in that area, "you're on your own, pal. Better make whatever accomodation with China you can." And they will, and it will not be favorable to us.

3. It puts China within spitting distance of Australia, our staunchest ally in the world at the present time-although Trump's recent comments indicate he doesn't give a shite about that.

I don't really have an issue with it, he is basically calling china's bluff and honestly I don't see China using their military here. Maybe I'm wrong, the USA isn't going to way with China over it either so he's bluffing also.

This could get interesting.

This could but it won't outside of the diplomatic song and dance. Militarily, China isn't going to shite about this. I think as long as there's even a slight chance of U.S. support, the Chinese will be kept at bay.

During WWII, the Philippine resistance forces were a formidable ally

Yes. They have fought beside us in every conflict since WWII, including Vietnam. You can't say that about Canada or Britain.

Alpha move bro until I pour gasoline on the mound and incinerate their arse. Duterte thinks drug users should be exterminated. Yet another alpha move

Oh I know... they gave the Japs hell. I wasn't joking about little brown dudes popping out of the woods with machetes. They'd swoop in, slice your arse up, and disappear.

It would violate UN rules I'm sure which we are obligated to protect. This would be seen as imperialism by force.

Also, the Philippines are full of natural resources and are located in a very strategically advantageous place for naval and air bases. That is absolutely still relevant.

quote:

The Philippines produced 11 percent of the world's nickel in 2010. The country's rich natural resources also include major copper deposits, chromium, gold, and silver; minerals made up 8 percent of merchandise exports in 2011.

We have a mutual defense treaty with the Philippines. Nobody cares about the UN

Well there you go.

Still, we'd be obligated somewhat to protect them.

And it is absofrickinglutely a strategic area for us to have an ally. And they do have great resources.

Can't we just wait a few more years and sea level rise will take away these islands anyway?
