It would violate UN rules I'm sure which we are obligated to protect. This would be seen as imperialism by force.

Also, the Philippines are full of natural resources and are located in a very strategically advantageous place for naval and air bases. That is absolutely still relevant.

They're also one of our oldest and staunchest allies. Maybe a minor detail, but all of our other allies will be watching.
