Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte said Thursday he has ordered military personnel to occupy all Philippines-claimed islands in the disputed South China Sea.

"We tried to be friends with everybody but we have to maintain our jurisdiction now, at least the areas under our control. And I have ordered the armed forces to occupy all these," he said during a visit to a military camp on the Philippines island of Palawan.

How would you like to be some random Filipino private when the President tells you to go piss off the Chinese while he sits home safe?

Duterte knows how to try "to be friends" as well as the army of France knows how to win wars.

Crazy to look at Subi Reef and Fiery Cross Reef in that area and see what the Chinese are doing. Turning reefs into full military bases. Go look at Google Earth and put the history on.

So he goes to China and talks shite about America, says "America has lost", in order to cozy up to the Chinese. Now 7 months later he's pissing off the Chinese (not that the Chinese are in the right). This dude is begging to be destroyed.

I think they are banking on a US response if push ever came to shove, not actually thinking they can defeat the Chinese one on one. They're just marking their turf.

This.

Not sure who is going to rely on for support here. He burned our bridge pretty badly.

However, I guess the last thing the US wants is the Chinese to gain the Philippines as a territory. That would not be good.

He did this because he said Obama was weak and left him no choice and that he couldn't count on the US anymore. I'm sure he thought Hillary was going to win and continue the feckless stance against China. Obviously a few things have changed since then.

Explain why? I know we needed the Philippines in WWII for an air base to attack Japan but that isn't really relevant anymore. If this guy and China decide to duke it out, why exactly do we have to go help?

I'd seriously doubt China would want the Philippines folded into their country

The likely scenario would be China propping up/installing a communist insurgency that leads to war and the eventual communist takeover of Manila. Creating a communist puppet state much like NK
