Philadelphia Safe-Injection Site Draws Supporters in Court

Authorities from seven states, the District of Columbia and some major U.S. cities are backing a Philadelphia effort to open a supervised drug-injection site, which the federal government is trying to stop in court.
Safehouse, a nonprofit in Philadelphia, seeks to open a site where people can use drugs in a safe and sanitary environment with help to avoid overdose fatalities. Federal prosecutors sued the nonprofit in February, arguing it would violate federal law by creating a place for people to use illegal drugs such as heroin and bootleg fentanyl.
Cities including New York, San Francisco and Seattle, where there are also plans to add safe sites for drug users, filed a brief Wednesday in support of the Philadelphia nonprofit. Another filing from attorneys general, all Democrats, included chief legal officers from Colorado, Michigan, Oregon and the District of Columbia.
The civil suit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania has created a legal showdown over a concept that has already proven hard to implement in the U.S. over fears of a federal crackdown.
Supporters say these sites can save livesbecause they offer clean supplies, medical help and serve as gateways to treatment.

Philadelphia is one of the hardest-hit cities in a national drug crisis that led to 70,000 fatal overdoses in 2017, the last year of complete federal data.
Safehouse’s plan “is a critical measure designed to save lives and to fill a time-sensitive gap in medical care that many localities struggle to overcome,” the attorneys general argued in their brief to the court on Wednesday.
Opponents of the supervised-injection plan include civic associations in and around a drug-ravaged neighborhood in north Philadelphia and a local branch of the nation’s largest police union.
An injection site would exacerbate a crisis that already causes crime and open drug use in the neighborhood, they argued in their filing.
quote:
“Safehouse claims it should be above the law because it believes its good intentions with respect to one group—those who suffer from addiction—permit it to ignore other innocent victims of the illegal drug trade,” the opponents said.
Proponents have argued that evidence beyond U.S. borders, including in Canada, has shown the merits of creating safe places for drug users.
Supporters also included a group of 64 current and former prosecutors and law-enforcement officials; nine Philadelphia-area community organizations; religious leaders; Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and the city’s health commissioner.
Philadelphia hasn’t committed to opening its own injection site, but has supported the idea of letting private organizations open them. Safehouse’s board includes ex-Philadelphia mayor and ex-Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell.
Safehouse Vice President Ronda Goldfein said the nonprofit wants to open multiple sites in Philadelphia, including the hard-hit Kensington neighborhood. First they have to clear the legal hurdle.
“We are respectful and certainly waiting for the court’s ruling,” Ms. Goldfein said. “We’re not trying to drive this stuff underground.”
What a time to be alive

I support Darwinism.

We’re going to pay people to “help” people shoot up. Shoot me.

Better than them stealing your car to do it in.

They've been trying to open those things around here for years (Seattle). The funny thing is that even though it has widespread support, no one wants one in their neighborhood.

We need to just make all these drugs legal. The war on drugs has been a monumental failure and throwing addicts in jail/prison just makes the problem worse

If the non profit exists solely on donations, I am all for it.
No reason people can't decide to spend there own money helping addicts have a safe environment to get high in.
If they get a single dime of tax payer money, then this shite needs to be shut down.
Tax paying citizens should not be forced to pay for drug addicts to have a place to shoot up.

Sounds like an easy way for the PD to round up the junkies.

Throwing them in jail does what exactly?

So if they don't receive taxpayer money you are fine with people harboring and/or becoming a place for criminal activity to take place?

They do this in maybe Switzerland iirc. There's stipulations to it though. It's used to ween people off the drugs and get them working. If they dont follow the protocol, they're kicked out.
Most of the patients are successful in the program and its proven its worth. Its radical for people to get on board with though
If it's just a safe place to get high, men

Build on to the local jails and courthouses. Teach inmates how to revive motherfrickers

It's the same issue with most liberal ideas. They are great in theory (in a perfect world so to speak) but no one including libs are willing to actually practice what they preach.
Perfect example is the mixed income housing developments that replaced most of the housing projects in New Orleans. No one wants to buy or rent the higher end units of these places cuz their neighbors would be crackhead welfare queens.

They are gonna do it anyway. An addict will always find a way when they are addicted. Until this country focuses more on treating the issues that are causing the addiction over just tossing them in jail and making them criminals nothing will change.

Hopefully it passes and we can see the results.

I couldn't imagine working at one of those places

Of course not.
All those liberal do-gooders feel virtuous for supporting good deeds at someone else's expense

In America, people can spend their money on anything they want.
If they want to spend their money on giving Heroin addicts a place to get high, by all means waste your money.
Idk where they will find a place that will let them open up since no one will want a glorified crack house in their neck of the woods but if they find such a place AND can fund it without government money, then it is cool with me.
Lets not act like these dope fiends aren't gonna go shoot up even if this non profit fails. At least in this case its in a known location.
