100% this, blows my mind that some people overlook this basic and easy point. The people who call you a "bootlicker", who keep their cell phones recording in the officer's face, try to challenge them on the laws of being detained based on somethign they read on the internet, only roll their window down a quarter of an inch with their license in a plastic bag, etc....those are the ones that seemingly always have these kind of issues.

The other 90% of people you don't ever read about are the ones taht are polite, do as their instructed, and go on about their way in 5 minutes without incident.

they hadn't approached the vehicle at all, they simply put a light on his window which is harmless. Things only escalated when the guy got out of his car with somethign in his hand. This is simple stuff people.

When you get pulled over you sit in the car with your hands in plain sight and wait for the instructions.

If you're innocent, the police will sort it out and you'll be in your way.

If you're guilty, you just got caught, don't make life worse on yourself.

When I was 18 I experienced the same situation. I was on my way to work and I noticed a woman following me for about 2 miles. After I pulled into the parking lot, 3 cruisers blocked me in and told me to get out at gun point. They detained me and asked me if I had insurance and registration. I gave it to them and they pulled my VIN number. The bitch that called the police watched the whole incident unfold. After the police verified that it was my car they let me go. That fricking bitch didn't even apologize. She left the parking lot within seconds. One officer was nice enough to walk with me and explain to my boss why I was late. I let it go.

I always laugh my arse off when ignorant people start spouting amendments at police. They have no idea how the law works or how it has evolved.

If you're innocent and polite with police and do what they say, 99/100 times they'll sort it out and let you go.

I believe the figure is actually more like 99,999 out of 100,000. It's very simple. Stay in car, produce license/insurance/registration (if items are in pocket/glovebox then notify officer if he is at the window or approaching when you go to get it, wait, have chuckle and drive on. If you jump out, refuse to produce items, hastily reach into your pants or glovebox, then your night will go bad.

I think the cops went beyond what they should have here, but it all started with the young man stepping out of the vehicle unprompted. The cops are at fault here as well, but this is a "Y'all won't believe this tweet" instead of a mugshot if he obeyed the first rule of a traffic stop.

for what purpose? There is absolutely nothing that is accomplished by this that wouldn't also be accomplished by waiting in your vehicle.

I agree 100%. He had his hands up and was completely nonthreatening. No need for a 7 person swarm.

But the moral of the story is sit in your car and be polite.

Cops either ask you to exist the vehicle or put your hands out the window. This kid didn't know wtf to do. Cops didn't really do a good job handling the situation.

They didn't even have time to get close enough to have a conversation with him before he exited the car.

I have guns in my vehicle, and I don't like people standing over me. Safer for them after the initial shock.

Turn flashers on, roll windows down, walk to the back of the vehicle.

They have already run my plate by the time I stop. They will see that I match my ID and have zero outstanding. They will also see I'm a well dressed 30 year old white guy.

Ok? When they approach your window that's when you tell them this information.

You've been pulled over, it doesn't matter what you "like"

Safer for them

No. You know all about yourself and how well-behaved and well dressed and white you are..when they pull someone over they don't know the first single thing about you or what your intentions are. All they see is a guy being pulled over getting out of his car. There is simply no reason to not just wait patiently in your car and let them do their business. As soon as you switch things up from the norm, you've now put them on guard and raised their suspicions. Sure it may have worked out fine for you thus far, but there's no reason to even put you or them in that situation.

He's black, what a surprise. Yeah, racism is dead.

The police were responding to a call from someone who said it might be stolen. Maybe she was black, maybe there had been a run of stolen vehicles in the area making people paranoid. Maybe that woman had people she knew get their car stolen, or she almost had her car stolen.

Don't call yourself a thinking human being if you chalk it up to one single variable in an environment with Thousands of variables. There's a lot of factors at play.

Edit: Evanston has a decent amount of crime, which comes as no shock considering the area....

I'm not required to tell them a damned thing in my state. And I don't. All are hidden from plain sight.

I am equally unconcerned about what they "LIKE".

I get pulled over once maybe every three years and I do NOT get ticketed. I do not break the law and if I am being pulled over it is a misunderstanding.

There is a small blue reflector on the lower left portion of the car which also is a handy hint of what they can expect.

The gold badge conveniently left sitting on the dash will also give them a hint or two when they do the walk around.

If this guy was white, the cops don't get called on him.
