Petroleum Engineering

Is there a future or opportunities in the job market for someone who graduates with a Petroleum Engineering degree anymore? What’s the size of the department and enrollment these days at LSU? It seems like it’s an incompatible degree to transition into another industry or engineering role. Any success stories in transitioning from a Petroleum Engineer in the oil and gas industry into another successful career?

Not An Engr, but theyll always have a need for them. Not like Oil and gas are going anywhere. This whole going green is a facade as it takes oil and gas to go green. Wind turbine, solar panels, EVs all made from oil.

Theres still a need for them but theres already sooo many of them, its a very saturated field with tons of degrees sitting at the house.
Way better off getting mech, civil, etc.

Learn to code. Trust me on this.

High risk high reward.
I am partial, but I recommend Chem-e. It's a bit more diverse.
Can't go wrong with mechanical or electrical/computer engineering either.

I think you are missing the big picture,
First, if you got rid of all hydrocarbon produced energy you would reduce the amount of hydrocarbons produced by over 90%, making it a minor industry.
Second, you don’t need hydrocarbons to produce anything.
As this article explains

In the future everyone will be a twitch streamer.

Brother, the stuff in that article is all very hand-waving.
It's being reported as just passing the theoretical stage into some basic toll gate benchmarks. It's not scalable to the commercial /industrial needs of today, much less 50 years from now. The chemical conversions may happen in a test tube with a ton of energy input, but the claims in the article of shuttering the petrochemical industry is not happening in our lifetime.

This was me. Started off in Petroleum Eng, and switched to ChE. Excellent decision.

I bet you are way in the minority here. Seems like I always hear about people getting out of chem e, and petroleum seemed to be a popular destination.

EE or Mechanical, you can always work in Petro anyway.

I know 3 PetE grads in their 20s. One is a plant operator, 1 is working on the river(not a pilot), and I'm not sure if the 3rd guy is even working right now. Pick one of the other disciplines.

John Kerry , Biden’s Environmental Czar, says you should pivot and learn how to assemble solar panels. As he flies all over the world in his private jet.

Hope you remember to charge your batteries before every meal too.

My cousin, the TDS one, bought a Hybrid, telling me how he was helping do away with Petroleum. I laughed and told him to check with me after he did an inventory of the vehicle and the part of the car made from Petroleum. Plastics are here to stay in one form or another.

Not a PE, but a geologist.
I manage software products now.
The industry is changing, and it will be extremely competitive to keep up with a 35 year career at this point going forward. Not saying it can’t be done, but it will be hard.
If you want to test the waters in industry you can do so with a different engineering degree like chemical or mechanical, which will be much easier to leverage elsewhere if/when needed.

No, Oil and gas will not be a good career. You should not go into it if you are in your 20s. There is no future in it. I spent 40 years in the business and retired at the end of 2019.
