My oldest was allowed to have a phone when she turned 12. The decision was made primarily because of after school activities and such, which made it necessary for her to contact us.

When she was 13, she was allowed to get an Instagram account, which we put a number of rules and restrictions on. In hindsight, this was not a good idea. She recently turned 14, and we've since shut down her Instagram account and internet access on her phone. She didn't get into any real trouble with it, but there are a lot of influences out in the social media world that were steering her in a direction that we are not comfortable with.

In talking with her pediatrician, she said she's seeing more and more of this and wishes parents wouldn't allow any kind of phone access beyond basic text/call to parents or social media until at least age 16. The teen brain isn't developed enough at an early age to allow for good judgement and the ability to rationalize or understand long term consequences of decisions. Rather, decisions are processed based on emotion. The connections between the emotional part of the brain and the decision making part of the brain are still being developed, and won't fully develop until around age 25. Remember all the dumb shite you did in high school and college that you look back on now and say "what was I thinking?" This is exactly why.

So yes, there's an actual developmental reason that teens really don't need to have access to the entire internet or social media. We as parents will re-evaluate the situation going forward, but we're in no hurry to give her (or her younger sister) access to either beyond what is necessary for school anytime soon.

As always, your mileage may vary.

I will again ask who said anything about the smart phone?

This story is almost universal for every teen with a phone. All great kids.

No teen is immune to this.

I agree that they are distracting and parents should be responsible when it comes to getting their kid a phone, but I don't think there should be anything telling people what they can and can't do.

Personally, I think it would be a good idea to give a child a cell phone as young as 8 or 9.. But not a smartphone. Just a phone they can keep on them for safety reasons, but I think I would take the "here is the phone we give you. you can get the phone you want when you are paying for it".

I would rather go for prime rib with Lafawnduh than play tetherball with Deb.

Yep. It's invaluable if your kid has a life outside the home

I think you need to know your kid and decide individually. My daughter had an iphone at 8 and it did not set her back or make her socially awkward. She's a very good student and athlete.

I don't get this either. My kids are involved in stuff damn near daily. We know when they start and end. It's not like we are waiting on a call when something is over then heading to get them.

With the use of GroupMe and other applications you have a pretty good handle on em at all times.

Ever had a soccer practice canceled and need to let them know? Or had one end early because of a surprise thunderstorm, even though it's sunny and bright out 5 miles away, so now they need to be picked up 45 minutes sooner than planned?

Things come up. That's why we got her the phone to begin with. Now, I'll admit that we made a mistake by allowing more access than needed. But that's a different topic.

Didn't sign. Don't support. I'm capable of deciding when to give my child a phone without government coercion.

Coach sends a group me out. "Hey we are ending practice early". These things have been managed for decades without direct communication with each participant.

I coach as well. Parents leave kids all the time with no phone. I've never encountered an issue. They just use my phone or I shoot the parent a text

FYI

LNCHBOX posted in this thread all day mid-week. Its obvious the wife wears the pants. Guess she was out all day at work while he watched the house. Hope my late reply did not screw up you cooking dinner.

All of your arguments are invalid. Whaaaa... whaaa what if my kid needs me...whaaa whaa. I grew up without a fricking phone in my pocket and instead of calling momma when something went wrong I figured things out myself. Thats probably why I pay the bills and make the rules while you are at home all day on the internet and in the kitchen.
