Like all other insurance, if something major happens it's worth it. If nothing happens, it's not.....

Yes. I turned down coverage for my pet and then she had an injury that is super expensive to fix correctly. Had I had the insurance I'm assuming that the cost would've been drastically cheaper, even if it doesn't cover all of the charges.

Per Dave Ramsey, it's not smart financially to have it. Best case scenario your dog lives to 15. It sounds like it isn't overly expensive so it may be worth it to you to have it, but if you get in a situation where something bad happens to your pet that is racking up thousands and thousands of dollars it is probably more humane to put it down.

Got insurance on my dog and then he dislocated his knee like a month later.

It won't be until 2025 or so before the amount they paid for his surgery is equal to the amount I've paid in premiums.

So killing my one year old dog who had a moderate knee injury (that he would fully recover from in a few months) was the more humane option? The frick?

My dog ate a sock when she was a puppy. We went to the vet, got scans and blood work etc.. ran up a $500+ bill.

I got pet insurance afterwards ~$35/month through Trupanion.

Fast forward 1.5 years and my dog has eaten about 5 socks and pooped them out each time. Never went to the Vet for these occurrences. XRay's alone are about $200, so you would need something major to happen to even come above the $250 deductible.

TLDR ; been paying for something I haven't used

Also I remember reading in the policy that they only pay for one injury type every 2 years or something.

ie.. insurance only covers a broken leg once every two years

What breed?
If it’s one that is prone to cancer or oral issues that you would consider treating it may be worth it

What are your premiums? I think ~40 is high. Was thinking more around 20

Like 35 a month.

I have a 4 year old lab who has had 2 $3k surgeries to remove shite from her stomach. I scoffed at the idea initially, but began looking into it recently. I'm gonna find out more during my next vet visit.

Cost = $38/month with $250 deductible

so paying for 4 years, you're guaranteeing 2k plus of cost.

Jack Russell

How is his general health?

We had a rat terrier that lived to 17 & up until the end she was healthy.

It depends on the situation & what you are willing to put your pet through.

We let LSU do a 3K surgery on our Beagle because they guaranteed it would fix her issue, 5 years later when she got cancer we kept her comfortable until it was time to let her go. Even though we could have treated it there were other issues that couldn’t be fixed so we would have been putting her through a lot & she still wouldn’t have been healthy if the cancer was cured.

I would probably consider it. My last 2 dogs that died, I probably spent $8K in their last 3 months of life combined to treat them for cancer.

This is of course, there aren't a ton of exclusions to the policy, I would check that carefully.

BTW, I don't regret spending the money, but it might have cost me less with the same results with insurance.

Not only would I not buy pet insurance but I also would not spend thousands on pet procedures.

Sorry for differentiating animals from humans.
