Define "freaking out" for me.
And you realize that China put tens of millions of people on forced quarantine, which is WHY they are through the peak of the outbreak, it didn't just give up on its own.
Help me understand why people are so dense...

Look at hospital bed statistics in the US. That should be enough to worry everyone and see why this is so concerning.
If 10% of the 330M people in the US get the virus, that's 33M people. If 10% have severe symptoms that's 3.3M people (1%). The US has approximately 1M acute care hospital beds. So that means less than 1 of every 3 individuals that might need acute care can get the necessary help they need. Complicating this is the number of beds already in use, the number of respirators, and the distribution of hospital beds. Many urban areas will have 1000:1 ratios or greater of beds to their population.
The stats show the unprecedented actions are fully warranted. Pull the band-aid now and hopefully get back to normal by May/June.

The only thing that makes sense is that we are trying to expose the masses to this slowly so as not to overwhelm the hospitals and develop a herd immunity to the virus.
I think that definitely could have been accomplished without the media sensationalism and agencies/companies trying to win the look how careful we are race.

Some people are celebrating a crashing economy and hoping many more die.
Some are acting like it's not even worth discussing.... which is also dangerous.
Some of us just continue to take extra precautions during this time of year when viruses are at their peak like we would any other year. Except some like me, are spending more time arguing on TD more than most years.

No groceries, no toilet paper, no water (this and TP blow my mind further than anything), etc. I’m sorry you think I’m dense. But, at least I’m not a pompous arse

I read a couple places that it may have mutated to a less dangerous strain
I was wondering if that might be the case. It was really, really bad in Wuhan. Europe got hit next and it was bad, but not as bad as Wuhan. We got hit last and so far it's not as bad as Europe.
So it either weakened, or a weaker strain made its way here.

There won't be that many deaths globally.
Agreed
We can argue the what if they hadn’t done anything till we are blue in the face.

And even more can actually have the virus yet show no symptoms (but are still capable of transmitting it to others).
The LA Dept of Health says that's wrong.

Probably would have tamped diwn the panic.
500k tests are being distributed in the next 48 hours.
Assume results on 100k are known by end of the week.
These are people with underlying symptoms, so the test could come back positive for 10k or so. And 100 more deaths.
Do you think these numbers, or any for that matter, will cause the media and government to change their tune from "we're all gonna die" to "ain't that bad"?
The fear mongering sky screamers will just find something else to bitch about.
Eta: likely related to all of the people out of work because of the overreaction

CDC has the following on their web page:
"Can someone spread the virus without being sick?
People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest).
Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads."
So it appears the CDC thinks you can spread it without being symptomatic...
