And I think there is a difference between purchasing a high end NYC apartment and renting your typical apartment in middle america.
Living in your typical middle america apartment does tend to correlate with lower end socioeconomic status.
A 3k square foot "apartment" overlooking Central Park is not anywhere close to the same thing.

NYC is a shitty car town even by the $50m “apartments”. I see multiple Maybachs everyday, but rarely anything cool. Occasionally I see a guy in a 930 flachbau cab and a few euro spec 2 door G-wagens.

No disagreements there. My original point was that I find it amusing that people here tend to insinuate that living in an apartment (or renting :shock:) equates to poverty. That’s all.

He could do that, but it's just not the year model that makes it worth putting any extra money into. Once he drives another, years before or after he will come to realize his mistake.

Which is why a 59 goes for the price of a new, top of the line corvette and a 76 goes for less than the price of a pre-owned Kia. It’s a budget car that looks like a classic sports car but doesn’t have the engine of one. You buy it cheap and supe it up for cheaper than buying one of the “better” and far more expensive model years.
Since I’m not really a car guy and just would want something that looks cool to ride around town in, a 76 would fit my needs quite well. I could always drop a new engine in it later.

I have never seen another 288 GTO and only seen a handful of F40s at F1 races over the years.

If you re going to drop another engine in it, I would rather you consider a 72 or 73. The 4 spd was an option for 76, but those might be hard to find and you will pay for that. The auto's were beaten on and were not the best for longevity.
Whatever route you take, I strongly encourage you to get someone who knows C3 Corvette's to go with you. These cars have well hidden issues that a casual buyer can overlook easily.

Greatly appreciated. My uncle is a corvette man (he's rebuilt several over the years). I'd probably bring him (assuming I can get him away from the hunting camp).

In 59 they sold about 7,000 cars of which many are long gone. They sold 46,000 '76's and many of those are easily found in various stages of condition.
Numbers matching on a 59 will bring high $$ that a numbers matching 76 will never see.
There are parts available for each, but the 59 is going to costs you the other leg.

There are car guys and there are guys who just aren't into cars.
If you're a car guy, you know that driving a sports car with 400+ hp is a completely different driving experience than driving a Ford Focus, and you enjoy every moment that you drive - even if it's a quick run to the convenience store for a gallon of milk.
If you're a car guy, your perception of another guy who drives a sports car is likely "good for him."
If you're a non-car guy, your perception is probably one of the following - either you don't give a rat's arse, or you call it douchey because you're jealous.
