Not talking about advanced mathematics, engineering, or other specialties. I'm talking about things like simple geography and distances from point A to point B. I seem to run into a lot of people that have issues with this. Brilliant scientist I'm acquainted with knows I used to work in Baton Rouge but now work in Texas. He asks me how my drive in is everyday from BR. I'm like you realize that would be almost 4 hours 1 way and I no longer live in BR. He says wow didn't realize it was that far away, thought it was right by Lake Charles. I was stunned.

Your, "being stunned" is actually pretty petty.

No, I don't know any idiots on a day to day basis.

He does know that would still be a two hour drive one way right?

He probably doesn't look down on you the way you look down on him

Is taking note of this a self conscience attempt to make yourself feel smarter?

My wife. She's the dumbest smart person a know at times. I've gotten in the habit of staring at her blankly when she asks dumb questions, she quickly reconsiders.

The guy you know was from Texas and he worked in BR for a while.

He mistakenly thought Lake Chuck was closer to BR than it actually is.

How many Louisianans are expert on Texas geography?

Lake Charles has around 75,000 population.

Locate on a map the following five Texas cities of ~75,000 population:

League City
Flower Mound
Pharr
Mission
North Richland Hills

I could locate exactly zero of them off the top of my head.

tl/dr: OP thinks Louisiana is the center of the known world

He probably assumed you fly in your personal jet like he does. Shouldn't take more than an hour that way.

Probably why he asked the question in the first place. He was thinking that was a long commute and was just asking how it was.

2 hours isn't unheard of. I'm sure some people who live in Lafayette work in Nola..

Maybe it's because I'm from south Louisiana, but it amazes me how little people outside of the immediate gulf coast know about hurricanes and all the misconceptions they believe.

My wife has two degrees in Microbiology and ChemE but has no concept of direction, is a terrible writer, and refuses to learn how to change a tire despite commuting 130miles/day roundtrip.
