re: People who've lost a lot of weight, how did you do it?

I took 2 years to lose and keep off 25 pounds for good. In 2018 I had reached 235 and felt pudgy at 6’1.5”. Since 2020 I bounce around at 208-210-212 usually and the 212 it reflects the amount I eat over a couple of days. Sometimes I may eat a heavier than normal meal but get right back to 210 quickly.

Stop drinking Coke, start sniffing coke.
For real though, soft drinks are terrible and Coca Cola is my weakness. I'll stop drinking it for awhile and eventually months later cave and have one and it's flat out amazing. I got to where I only have one with lunch and that's my happy medium.

Drop soda completely - not even “diet” or low calorie soda - also drop any sugary drinks (sweet tea)
Drink at least 4 glasses of water - drink water when you are hungry to curb appetite
Dramatically reduce (or if you can, eliminate) breads and sugar (except natural sugar in fruits)
Stay at or under 2400 calories a day for men, 2000 calories for women
It’s not rocket science

Not the best way, 3 level back fusion surgery followed by 8 days in rehab then pulmonary embolism 3 days recovering from that followed by another 30 days in rehab hospital. Yes hospital food was so bad I lost 45 pounds at age 72.
I have gained back 20 pounds but determined to hold it there. Limit snacks to mixed nuts, pickles, apples, bananas and plums.

Went from 260 to 145 in about a year. Settled in at 150 and have been at that weight for 4 years with minimal effort.
Almost all diets will help you drop pounds. The trick is to keep it off. That is more tricky and requires you to change your whole relationship with food because the way you're consuming calories now led to the weight gain and if you go right back to it so will the weight.
It can't be a 'weight loss' diet. It has to be a method of eating that you enjoy and find sustainable. There are quite a few methods out there, some mentioned in this thread. Most will be effective if it's something you can stick with.
People that don't follow it might be surprised to know that online debate about diet is every bit as heated and vitriolic as political discussion. Don't get caught up in that. There is no one right way to eat like a lot of true believers will tell you. There is the way that works for you.

2023
January-250 lbs (5’11”) Cut back nightly cocktail and started eating less carbs.
March-238 lbs Began (6) weeks of semaglutide at the lowest dose .20mg per week. Totally stopped all alcohol and no carbs at all.
May-220 lbs Discontinued semaglutide (no longer available). Started back weights only (no cardio) and hit the gym at least once a day mostly twice for over 3 months (still do). Anytime Fitness.
September- 195 lbs. I’m still doing weights only but I do stretch and yoga exercises for about 15-20 mins before my workouts. Drink a beer or two once or twice a week (no hard liquor). Eat low carb and I get about 10k steps a day just by staying active. Protein shakes at least once daily (Walmarts brand muscle milk, egg, peanut butter, spinach, and Miralax). I pulled out my bike to get it ready for better cycling weather but still won’t cut back on weights. Still no sugar, low carbs, stay active, don’t go out to eat. No longer snore, can get 7 hours sleep and be great for the day, resting heart rate low 60s, BP out of hypertension and now below on average 120/80. Can see my pecker without a mirror and can clip my toenails without contorting.
Goal-180 lbs.
Disclosure- Prior to Covid I averaged 205-215 then had a left hip replacement bc of osteoarthritis and bone spurs (will need another one eventually on right side). I take 20 mg Delta 9 bf my workouts. My workouts look totally different from my previous ones bc I have to preserve my joints. I’m 56.
All I need now is to start BJJ so I’ll need some advice from Coyote. Also, shout to Mushroom for The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.
ETA: I wear one of those neoprene waist trainers daily.

No processed sugar and portion control - I also started walking very fast after watching my wife never gain a pound (she works retail and naturally walks at a fast gait).
I had a mild MI and three stents placed, but I feel better now than I have in ten years.
Lost 30 pounds since May 17.

OMAD or IF with clean eating/low carb works every time, isn’t mentally taxing like calorie counting can be, and you feel great. Win-win!

OMAD. Pretty darn hard to not lose weight eating one meal a day. I found it easy after the first week. Also nice to be on a “diet” and still be able to partake in any food served at parties and whatnot.

Diet is 85% of it.
Eat less
Eat clean

Yes the scientific aspect of this is very simple. Calorie deficit, eat less, move more. But losing weight and KEEPING it off is one of the hardest things a human can accomplish. One has to make a decision every single day on what foods you will/will not consume. For the rest of your life. You can never quit.
One thing to add. Each person has to find out what works for THEM.

Portion control and consistent exercise about 5 to 6 days a week

The OMAD, Fasting, and Intermittent Fasting subreddits are FULL of success stories/progress pics of huge people dropping significant weight, like dropping 100+ lbs.
It’s amazing to see. Those forums are also very positive because fasting and clean eating make people feel so much better.

Observing all of the young obese people everywhere is also an incentive to change one's perspective of the purpose of eating.

Is 35 alot? If so, keeping calories below 1,800 per day and jogging 6-13 miles three times per week.
You certainly don't need to jog that much. Just limit calories.
