People who overshare emotions and talk about their feelings too much

I am on a leadership team. Our new boss came in with transparency and emotional authenticity. Fast forward 4 months and it looks he is emotionally unstable. Why do people feel the need to share so many of their feelings and get so emotional? I come from the school of thought that showing your emotions is weakness. That might be a problem because I have a functional role as a counselor.

Because we've become a nation of Oprah-watching pussies.

Just wait...Your boss will soon make your entire office take the Emotional Intelligence quizzes

For 5 years in a row, our annual all staff retreat has had 4 of the 8 hours dedicated to discussions on where each employee lands on the personality spectrum. Are they a red, orange, blue, or green? NO, they are a IJTF, PCTG, SMTP, or HTTP

The women in the office love it and say it "helps us identify how to work with each other"

My counter argument is we have an employee that doesn't work well with others, fire her arse

I think it's pretty stupid to think that emotions are weak. There's a difference between being emotional and having/showing true, genuine emotion IMO. If you don't show your emotions every now and then, you're not truly living and are just trying to put up some fake robotic front.

quote:

When people say to me how do you get through life or each day, it’s the same thing. To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. Number three is you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.

I wouldn't shite too much on Myers-Briggs (the ITJF stuff you're talking about). That personality test is pretty legit and can be extremely useful for the workplace.

Now, is it feasible for everyone in the office to know who is what type of personality? Not really. But for a supervisor with a limited number of direct reports, knowing how their employees think can be a huge benefit.

Don't bring science and reason to an emotional thread.

This. Ever since they've entered the workforce it has been going down.

I will shite on Myers-Brigg as it has no profitable impact on my organization. Furthermore, my previous employer would use M-B as well. Both companies lack the follow through to actually use the data for corporate gain. So you sit there wasting 4 hours that could have been better used identifying ways to help our organization achieve its stated mission.

Any supervisor worth a damn should already know what makes their employees tick. If you need a doggone quiz that is best left to Cosmopolitan magazine then that supervisor needs to spend more time with his direct reports. There are so many better ways to influence employee productivity and inclusion.
